To play Pokemon Metal Red, you need:

  • A clean Pokemon Fire Red ROM (Google it)

Glitches

Glitch: Some Pokemon (like Morpeko and Gumshoos) have no moves when you find them. If you level them up they can learn moves to use. Without moves, they will use Struggle. Some Pokemon also have no abilities.

Glitch: Some Pokemon, like Beartic, are genderless or the wrong gender.

Glitch: Some moves, such as Uproar and Rock Smash, have 0 PP total. Others like Fake Out have only 1 PP. These were edited via Gen-3 Tools to put them back to normal. If you don't have that tool, refrain from using those moves — they will softlock your game.

Glitch: Some Pokemon, like Blipbug, are the wrong type.

Glitch: Flabebe evolves into a ????????? mon which looks like Silicobra and shows up looking like Mega Venusaur on the Pokemon select screen.

Pallet Town [PALL]

Mons found:

Surf: Tentacool 100%

Old Rod: Magikarp 100%

Good Rod: Magikarp 20%, Horsea 60%, Krabby 20%

Super Rod: Horsea 40%, Shellder 40%, Gyarados 15%, Seadra 4%, Psyduck 1%

Go through the prologue. You're in your room, and there's also a Rocket grunt in here. The menu is different than before. The Potion is still in the PC. The Rocket grunt gives you info on the ROM hack — if you want to share the game for anything, make sure to credit Romsprid.xyz.

Head to Oak's lab. Outside you can run since you have the Running Shoes from the start. There are some Pokemon outside on the buildings and trees but you can't interact with them. In Oak's lab is your rival and some Rotom Dexes, but the professor isn't there. Head north — the Professor will stop you and let you get your Pokemon. It's one of the Kanto starters.

Rival (rival): (opposing starter) Lv5 — P80

Head north.

Route 1 [RTE1]

Mons found (overworld): Pikachu, Spearow, NidoranF, NidoranM

  • Nickit 10%
  • Froakie 6%

There are some mons just out and about. Interacting with them allows you to battle them. There's a house here with Brendan from Hoenn — you can battle him.

PKMN Trainer Brendan: Treecko Lv6 — P360

He'll go into his house to heal, but you can't follow him inside as the door's locked. Head north to Viridian City.

Viridian City [VIRI]

There's a weird black hole to the west, but a kid blocks you from accessing it. Go to the PokeCenter and talk to the Chansey outside to get a Potion. Go to the PokeMart for Oak's Parcel. Since you can't go anywhere else, return to Pallet Town to deliver the parcel to Oak. You and the rival get Rotom Dexes, plus 5 Poke Balls. Return to Viridian City and catch mons along the way.

PokeMart:

  • Poke Ball: P200
  • Potion: P300
  • Antidote: P100
  • Parlyz Heal: P200

You can do the catching tutorial with the old man to get the Teachy TV. You can also detour to Route 22 for more mons and a rival battle. Note: the rival is around Lv20!

Rival (rival): Pidgeotto Lv18, (opposing starter) Lv20 — P320

Note: Blipbug is Normal type for some reason.

If you want a rain effect in battle, talk to the guy in front of the gate. The left side is a dead end, but you can get a Poke Ball there. You need to go east.

Bug Catcher Rick: Beedrill Lv15 (mega evolves), Weedle Lv15, Caterpie Lv15 — P180

If you head south from this bug catcher, you'll meet your first accessible ultra threshold. Here you have a chance to catch Tapu Bulu Lv20! Head north when ready.

Bug Catcher Doug: Butterfree Lv15 (can Gigantamax), Caterpie Lv15, Weedle Lv15 — P180

An Antidote is in the NE corner.

Bug Catcher Anthony: Ledyba Lv14, Ledian Lv15 — P180

Bug Catcher Charlie: Yanma Lv15, Spinarak Lv15, Scyther Lv15 — P180

Get the Potion. You're almost done. Get an Antidote from the rock before the final set of grass. On the west side of the grass is a hidden Potion.

Bug Catcher Sammy: Pinsir Lv15 (mega evolves) — P180

Head north on Route 2. At Pewter City's entrance, the guy here gives you the National Dex! That way you can evolve the non-Kanto mons you may have caught along the way.

Pewter City [PEWT]

The Chansey outside the PokeCenter gives you a Potion.

Camper Liam: Alolan Geodude Lv20, Alolan Sandshrew Lv20 — P400

Leader Brock: Steelix Lv20 (mega evolves), Alolan Geodude Lv20, Alolan Graveler Lv20 — P2000, Boulder Badge, and TM39 Rock Tomb

A Great Ball is behind the fence, and an Escape Rope is in a rock north of the gate. You can't head east because of the Snorlax in the way. A scientist at the gatehouse can give you the Itemfinder if you caught at least 30 Kantonian mons. The Youngster here wants to trade his Nidorina if you have a Nidorino. We'll skip Diglett's Cave for now since we need Cut on the other side. On to the S.S. Anne!

S.S. Anne [ANNE]

Glitch: If you tap south once you reach the first S.S. Anne screen, you'll return to the harbor. Tap another direction and run south to access the S.S. Anne.

Let's check things out from right to left. Take the steps and check the trash can for a Hyper Potion. Now for the rooms, from right to left:

First room has a Super Potion.

Sailor Leonard: Hitmontop Lv28 — P896

Sailor Duncan: Vaporeon Lv23, Alolan Marowak Lv25, Hypno Lv25 — P800

Next cabin is the rest cabin.

Gentleman Arthur: NidoranM Lv29, NidoranF Lv29 — P2088

Nothing in the next two cabins. Two trainers are in the next cabin:

Lass Ann: Alolan Sandshrew Lv25, Wigglytuff Lv25 — P400

Youngster Tyler: Quilava Lv25 — P400

TM31 Brick Break is in this room. Next cabin just has an undercover agent hunting for Team Rocket. Enter the kitchen — the trash cans have a Pecha Berry, a Cheri Berry, and a Chesto Berry. There's also a Great Ball here. Head upstairs, take the next set of stairs, and go out to the front of the ship.

Sailor Trevor: Alolan Graveler Lv25, Alolan Muk Lv25 — P800

Sailor Edmond: Machoke Lv25, Haunter Lv25 — P800

Back on the second floor, head through the cabins left to right. First one has a guy who describes Snorlax. Next has two trainers:

Fisherman Dale: Goldeen Lv27, Tentacool Lv27, Goldeen Lv27 — P972

Gentleman Brooks: Pikachu Lv36 (Gigantamax) — P2592

Pick up a Stardust and venture into the cabin after the next cabin.

Gentleman Lamar: Growlithe Lv27, Galarian Ponyta Lv27 — P1944

Lass Dawn: Pikachu Lv25 (Gigantamax), Alolan Raticate Lv25 — P400

Pick up the X Attack. The last two cabins have nothing to note. Head to the steps to meet the rival.

Get HM01 Cut and when completely ready, leave the boat. Cut the tree and let's confront our Electric type gym.

Engineer Baily: Electrode Lv30, Jolteon Lv30 — P1440

Gentleman Tucker: Pikachu Lv30 (Gigantamax) — P2160

Solve the puzzle.

Leader Lt. Surge: Ampharos Lv40 (mega evolves), Electabuzz Lv40, Alolan Raichu Lv40 — P4000, Thunderbadge, and TM34 Shock Wave

Time to visit Diglett's Cave and do some Cut backtracking.

Diglett's Cave [DIGL]

Mons found:

  • Alolan Diglett 95%
  • Alolan Dugtrio 5%

Just go through the cave. (Side note: A Repel was used and for some reason it didn't show when it wore off.)

On the other side of Route 2, enter the house and talk to the "Metapod" who is actually a trader — wants an Abra for a Mr. Mime. Enter the south gatehouse and talk to the scientist to get HM05 Flash as long as you caught at least 10 Kantonian mons. The south side of the route is blocked by a fence, but there are some items there — we'll take the long way.

On the other side of Viridian Forest, head to the east side and cut the tree to find an Ether and a Paralyz Heal. Return to Viridian City and cut the tree near the north entrance for a Potion (or just go around the trees at the west end north and east). The other tree to cut is near the SW end, where you can find a guy who teaches Dream Eater.

Finally, go to Pewter City and enter the museum via the side entrance, which requires cutting a tree. You can teach Seismic Toss by talking to the man at the right, and get an Old Amber from the guy to the north.

When done exploring, Route 9 east of Cerulean City is the next destination. Cut the tree to proceed.

Sabrina was done before Koga because Koga's levels are higher. Now you can use Surf, but we need to get it at the Safari Zone first.

In Area 2, pick up a Leaf Stone, then TM11 Sunny Day, then a Max Potion, then a Full Restore. In Area 3, the inner enclave has a Quick Claw. Detour to the right side of Area 4 to find a Max Revive and another Max Potion. Back in Area 3, get TM47 Steel Wing and a Protein.

On the side with the Secret House in Area 4, pick up the Gold Teeth, TM32 Double Team, and a hidden Revive in front of the house. Get HM03 Surf inside.

After you have all that, return to the warden's home, give his teeth back, and you'll get HM04 Strength. Use it in his house to get a Rare Candy. Done here!

Next stop: Cinnabar Island. There are two routes to get there. We'll start by heading south of Pallet Town first, but stopping short so we can do the other way afterwards. But first, let's check out the stuff we had missed — namely all the locations accessible by Surf.

In Celadon City, you can teach Softboiled by talking to the man across the pond. Cerulean Cave is still closed. In the Safari Zone's first area, get the Nugget and a hidden Leaf Stone on the island. On Route 12, get TM48 Skill Swap on the island. On Route 10, surf south to the Power Plant.

Pokemaniac Mark: Rhyhorn Lv38, Lickitung Lv38 — P1824

First item is a Max Potion. Head east at the fork first to get TM17 Protect and an Elixir before heading back on the path. Enter the south room next to find an Electrode. As far as is known, you can't catch Voltorb or Electrode here via random encounter. Electrode is in Cerulean Cave too, but Voltorb isn't anywhere.

The SE room has TM25 Thunder. The NE room has an Electrode and a Thunderstone. Keep going — when you see a small room to the south, enter it, then use the space in front of the east panel to find a Max Elixir. At the end, you can have a chance to get Zapdos. There's a hidden Thunderstone in front of the east generator as well.

Head NE first — push the boulder in, but don't follow it yet. Pick up an Ice Heal and continue east. Push the next boulder into the hole and follow it to 2F, pushing it again. Go back to 1F and take the ladder at the west side down. Head south, then east onto the next raised section to find a Revive. Ignore the ladder and head north to get to a boulder to push. Follow it down the next hole and push it again, but don't follow this time.

Take the ladder back to 2F and head to the middle ladder, taking it to 3F. Get the Big Pearl and take the ladder leading upwards — this leads to a Water Stone. Head back and take the down ladder. Get a Nugget hidden in the rocks to the left, then head right and down to a boulder puzzle. Push two boulders down the two holes, then follow them down.

On 5F, head straight up to meet Articuno. Afterwards, head to the main land and inspect a rock near the ladder to find a Water Stone. Go south to pick up an Ultra Ball, then head to the NE area. Take that ladder, then the next one. You should see a boulder — push it down to block the current on 4F. You can then go there, take the east ladder, then the subsequent ladders to leave to the left side of Seafoam Islands.

Keep going south. Surf across a pond and cut many trees to get to a Max Elixir. Head up to find Lostelle. Defeat or catch the Hypno to save her and get an Iapapa Berry. You'll automatically return to Two Island. Hand the Meteorite to the guy here to receive a Moon Stone in exchange.

Talk to the hiker to learn Explosion if you wish. There are Rocket grunts to the NE with passwords: "Goldeen need log" — and they'll see you after that. Nothing much happens now, so head west and push some boulders.

PKMN Ranger Beth: Bellsprout Lv49, Gloom Lv49, Gloom Lv49 — P1764

Crush Girl Jocelyn: Hitmonchan Lv52, Hitmonchan Lv52 — P1248

PKMN Ranger Logan: Exeggcute Lv49, Alolan Exeggutor Lv53 — P1908

Head to the dead end to the west first to pick up an Ultra Ball, then enter the cave. Go all the way through — it's linear. Back outside, solve the boulder/rock puzzle to get a Fire Stone. Head west next and get another Fire Stone from the rock, as well as an Ultra Ball. Head north, move more boulders, and you have your chance at Moltres. Nothing else to do here — the Rocket grunts do not do anything in particular. Return to One Island's center and talk to Bill to automatically leave.

This is the Armored Mewtwo from the anime movie — same typing. Those levels are higher than the trainers by over thirty levels. His team has items held that aren't useful in battle.

With eight badges, prepare for the league and a rival battle on Route 22.

Rival (rival): Pidgeot Lv65 (mega evolves), Rhyhorn Lv65, Alolan Exeggutor/Gyarados/Arcanine Lv65 x2, Alakazam Lv65, (opposing starter) Lv70 — P2520

The rival battle has several held items that are not really useful. Other than the Apicot Berry on Arcanine and the Pidgeotite, they serve no purpose. It seems to be for if you want to steal something with Thief.

Pokemaniac Dawson: Charizard Lv55 (Gigantamax), Lapras Lv55, Rhydon Lv55 — P2640

Cool Couple Ray&Tyra: Nidoqueen Lv65, Nidoking Lv65 — P3120

Take the ladder behind them. One last guy here — someone who will teach you Double-Edge.

You're still on Route 23, but two things of importance are here. First is Brendan, who's standing outside the entrance. You don't actually need to battle him to get by, so save him if you wish — he, along with the rest of the Elite Four and the Champion, has a Lv100 team. On Route 23 itself, there's a hidden Lum Berry at the west side, and when you enter the maze, a hidden Max Elixir near the west side in one of the dead ends. Head north to the league.

PokeMart:

  • Full Restore: P3000
  • Max Potion: P2500
  • Revive: P1500

PKMN Trainer Brendan (optional): Rayquaza Lv100 (mega evolves), Swampert Lv100, Blaziken Lv100, Sceptile Lv100, Salamence Lv100, Registeel Lv100 — P6000

Note: His Rayquaza when mega-evolved modified Swampert to be the Mega Rayquaza instead — another glitch.

Are you ready to take on the Elite Four? Well, you can't. Lorelei seems to be absent. The League is closed until further notice.

So what should you do? Talk to Celio — he's at One Island. He'll mention needing a special gemstone which exists on the island. Head to Mt. Ember again to find out what it is. Remember those Rocket grunts? They dug a hole, almost revealed the second password, and now they'll battle you for wanting to listen in.

Team Rocket Grunt: Cubone Lv48, Alolan Marowak Lv48 — P1536

Team Rocket Grunt: Alolan Rattata Lv48, Alolan Raticate Lv48, Alolan Sandshrew Lv48, Alolan Sandslash Lv48 — P1536

Beat both and you have access to Mt. Ember's secret cave.

Mt. Ember (Revisited) [EMB2]

Follow the linear path. At the third area, you'll need Strength. In the fourth area, head south at the fork — the other passage leads back to the first cave. By taking the down ladder, you'll enter a place with Braille tablets. Take the next ladder to find the Ruby. Leave and return to Celio. Give him the Ruby and he'll give you a Rainbow Pass. The other Sevii Islands are now open!

Glitch: If you attempt to put in two Pokemon, when you attempt to retrieve them, the game softlocks. You can store Pokemon in the Day Care but never retrieve them! This is bad, especially since there's supposed to be an opportunity to breed certain Pokemon. Well, pick up the Stardust and enter Icefall Cave.

Rocket Warehouse [ROCW]

Take the left arrow. Follow the path up without touching arrows until you find the right arrow. Take it, head south to another right arrow, then head west to a Big Pearl. Take the left arrow again, then the right arrow again, then the down arrow to the right — you'll be sent to the SW, where you can take the path to a Pearl. You have no choice but to take the path going north, where there is an Up-Grade.

With this, there's not much left to do. The Cerulean Cave is the last destination of our walkthrough. There's a trainer west of it.

Surf to the first ladder, take it, break the rocks, and get a Full Restore. Return to 1F and surf west, landing at the next set of steps. Get another Full Restore to the south before doing so. Ignore the ladder here, but get a hidden Ultra Ball two spaces east of the ladder, as well as the Nugget. Take the ladder to the south, break the rock, and collect a PP Up. Return to 1F and head south, then east, then north to another ladder. Break a rock and get an Ultra Ball before returning to 1F again. Get a Max Elixir and enter the last ladder.

In the maze, head south, then east at the next two forks. Follow the path to the next ladder, which goes from 1F to 3F. At the NE end is a Max Revive. Continue on the path to find an Ultra Ball, the last item we'll ever be getting. Continue and you have a chance to capture the Armored Mewtwo!

And that is it. This hack has way more than its worth, and certainly was a weird one which had to be slightly modified to get around bugs and such.

Note: The Rotom forms are not in the dex, but I did find Rotom-Wash in Route 22, Rotom-Heat in Route 2, and Rotom-Frost in Victory Road

Note: Poipole, Naganadel (evolves from Poipole at Lv35), Zeraora, Dusk Lycanroc, Stakataka, Dusk Mane Necrozma, and Blipbug do not seem to be in the dex. Blipbug's index number is also 000.

Note: There seem to be two types of certain Alolan form lines. I'm not sure why this is. But if you were to try using a Thunderstone on a Pikachu, it would turn into the alternate Alolan Raichu form.

Note: Darumaka evolves into Darmanitan via Ice Stone (as if it was the Galarian form). However, when you evolve it, it's the Fire-type Darmanitan.

Note: Karrablast for some reason evolves into Shelmet if you use a Trade Stone on it. It then turns into Accelgor if you use another Trade Stone. I do not know how to get Escavalier.

Note: Some of the Pokemon here somehow get listed as owned in the Pokedex despite not appearing anywhere I can find them in. Examples are Victreebel, Nosepass, Uxie, Duskull (this is in Pokemon Tower but I had it as owned before I went there), Dusclops, Torkoal. I'm not sure why this occurs, but sometimes it occurs after I catch other Pokemon I described in the note above about the ones that don't appear in the dex.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: Would you recommend this hack?

A: Absolutely not. It's filled with glitches and most of the obtainable Pokemon early on don't get moves and many lines are just not available.

Q: Hmm… the storyline of this is exactly like Fire Red! What gives?

A: I was quite surprised that there wasn't an alternate storyline. But I guess it's better than one that is terrible. In fact, not having a storyline saves it somewhat.

Q: How come I can't access the Pokemon League?

A: The woman there says Lorelei isn't available. In order to get the Pokemon League unlocked, you have to traverse through the Sevii Islands, go to get the Ruby in Mt. Ember, help Lorelei out in Icefall Cave, as well as infiltrate the Rocket Warehouse, which I outlined as we went through the Sevii Islands. Don't forget to talk to Lorelei in her house once this is all finished. Only then will the League become available.

Q: How many Pokemon total can you actually obtain in this hack?

A: Approximately about 600 or so are possible to catch. Not everything was available, like Galarian Slowpoke for instance, meaning entire Pokemon lines were just not available.

Q: Do the black holes do anything?

A: The only one that I was able to interact with was in Viridian Forest, which gave me a Tapu Bulu encounter. The other one in Viridian City is blocked by a kid and the others are just not available.

Q: Why is the Day Care bugged?

A: If you mean the Four Island daycare, I surely want to know myself! I was hoping to get several base forms of evolutions caught in eggs, and while egg-hatching isn't the actual problem (you can still receive and hatch eggs), you cannot withdraw your Pokemon from the Day Care without softlocking the game and this means you'd only be able to breed one particular evolution line. It sucks.
