About This ROM Hack
Pokémon Red Expanded is a full-scale overhaul of the original Pokémon Red that dramatically expands the Pokédex and modernizes battle mechanics while preserving the classic Kanto adventure.
Built from the pokered disassembly template, this hack introduces over 400 available Pokémon, updated mechanics from later generations, improved trainer AI, post-game content, and competitive-style features — all within the original Game Boy engine.
Rather than simply adding Pokémon, this project reworks Gen 1 into a mechanically modern experience while keeping its retro identity intact.
Story Overview
The main story follows the classic Kanto journey from Pokémon Red. You collect badges, defeat Team Rocket, and challenge the Elite Four.
However, the post-game expands beyond the original ending. Players can:
- Investigate what happened to Red at Mt. Silver before the events of Pokémon Gold and Silver
- Discover a continuation of the Pokémon Mansion diary storyline
- Complete the Pokédex to unlock a special encounter with a mysterious higher power
