About This ROM Hack

Pokémon FireRed Deluxe is a long-running rebalancing project that has been developed on and off since 2020. The primary goal of the hack is to deliver a more balanced, more challenging, and more deliberately designed FireRed experience, while still remaining faithful to the mechanics and philosophy of Generation 3 Pokémon.

Unlike many modern enhancement hacks, FireRed Deluxe intentionally avoids features such as the Physical/Special split, Fairy type, or excessive cross-generation Pokémon dumping. Instead, it focuses on refining what already exists—buffing underpowered Pokémon and moves, improving encounter variety, and redesigning bosses—so that nearly every Pokémon you encounter is viable.

The game is fully playable blind as a Nuzlocke, though extensive documentation is available for players who want it. Player freedom is a central design pillar: teams, routes, and strategies are meant to be flexible, not railroaded. The hack is complete up through the Champion, with a substantial postgame included.

Key Features

  • Extensive Pokémon Rebalancing: Nearly all Pokémon have received buffs through improved base stats, movepools, and, in some cases, typings, making almost any Pokémon you catch a viable team member.
  • Buffed and Reworked Moves: Traditionally weak moves such as Fire Spin or Cut have been improved to be useful in early, mid, and sometimes late-game scenarios.
  • Generation 3–Focused Design Philosophy: The hack intentionally avoids modern mechanics, such as the Physical/Special split or Fairy type, maintaining a core Gen 3 identity while enhancing depth and balance.
  • Regional Forms and Related Evolutions: Includes Alolan, Galarian, and Hisuian forms, as well as later-generation evolutions such as Crobat, Magmortar, and Leafeon, all integrated carefully into Kanto.
  • TM, HM, and Learnset Overhauls: Pokémon learn stronger and more logical moves. HMs are reusable, more battle-viable, and significantly less intrusive to team-building.
  • Hidden Grottos: Using the Secret Power HM, players can discover hidden grottos containing Pokémon and items.

  • Expanded Pokémon Availability:
    • All original 151 Kanto Pokémon are obtainable
    • LeafGreen exclusives included
    • Greater Pokémon and item diversity throughout the game
  • Harder and Smarter Boss Battles: Gym Leaders and bosses are more challenging and often use off-type Pokémon to complement their teams.
  • Dynamic Gym Order: Koga, Sabrina, and Blaine can be challenged in any order, with teams and levels scaling based on badge count.
  • Additional Boss Encounters: Includes new minibosses, some inspired by other Pokémon titles such as LGPE and Pokémon GO.
  • No Badge Boosts: Badge stat boosts are removed to ensure fair and consistent difficulty.
  • Increased Double Battles: More double battles are included to add strategic variety.
  • In-Game Documentation: A modified help menu provides information about mechanics, changes, Nuzlocke level caps, and bosses. This system is functional but still considered a work-in-progress.
  • Map Changes and New Areas: Several areas have been redesigned or expanded, with Viridian Forest highlighted as a major example.
  • Gym Leader Rematches: Gym Leader rematches are included but remain a work in progress.

Known Bugs & Issues

  • Gym Leader rematches are still partially WIP.
  • As with any large ROM hack, occasional bugs may occur; frequent saving is recommended.
  • Emulator compatibility is best with mGBA.
