About This ROM Hack

Pokémon Yume 夢 is an enhancement hack of Pokémon Red and Blue built on the pokered disassembly. Its goal is to enrich the originals with improved gameplay balance, expanded Pokémon accessibility, and carefully integrated additions that feel natural to the Kanto setting. The hack preserves the charm and spirit of the original games while offering new content, storylines, and quality-of-life improvements.

“Yume” (夢) means dream, representing a return to Kanto, where memory and reimagination merge. Inspired by the anime, manga, and later Pokémon generations, Yume introduces expanded storylines, new areas, subtle cultural touches, and a deeper postgame experience.

Key Features

Expanded Pokémon Accessibility: All 151 original Pokémon can be obtained through normal gameplay. Version-exclusive Pokémon are no longer locked—some appear more commonly in certain versions, but nothing is completely unavailable.

Playable Characters: Players can choose to play as Red or Green, boy or girl avatars. Player sprites have been updated for running, surfing, and general movement.

New Areas and Maps: Explore brand-new zones like Mandarin Island, Cinnabar Volcano, Saffron Pokémon Academy, Celadon Grove, and Mt. Moon Square. Travel via new Citrus ferries, visit refurbished Pokécenters with modern layouts, and check out updated Celadon Mart floors with PP-related items in the postgame.

Postgame Content: Engage in new quests around each Elite Four member to unlock rematches, battle a restored Prof. Oak, and discover hidden locations that lead to the Mythical Pokémon Mew. Extra dialogue and secrets are woven naturally into existing and new areas.

Gameplay Updates – Battles:

  • Moves: Several moves reworked for balance and authenticity; Ghost is Special, Dragon is Physical; Focus Energy and Dire Hit fixes applied.
  • Learnsets: Pokémon learnsets revamped to give more strategic options while keeping Gen 1 feel. Stone and trade evolutions still learn moves.
  • Gym Leaders & Elite Four: Teams improved with better movesets; some Gym teams slightly modified while keeping their theme. Rival’s team is now more diverse.
  • New Trainers & Rematches: Additional trainers added across old and new areas; rematches for Gym Leaders and Elite Four with stronger teams and movesets.
  • Battle Hall: New 3v3 random battle facility added.

Wild Encounters: Reworked to increase diversity and allow earlier availability of many Pokémon. Fishing encounters updated with new levels and species. The Pokédex now separates Land, Surf, and Fishing encounters. New NPCs provide missing fossils and pre-Elite Four Hitmonlee or Hitmonchan.

Visual and Audio Enhancements: Updated maps, Gym Leader sprites, player sprites, animations, Super Game Boy palette adjustments, restored trainer card names, and multiple visual bug fixes.

Quality-of-Life Improvements:

  • Running shoes are usable with B.
  • Overworld HMs are accessible with A without taking a move slot.
  • Bag expanded to 30 slots, key items in a dedicated pocket.
  • Assign key items to the Select button.
  • Repel reuse prompt.
  • Haunter, Graveler, Kadabra, and Machoke evolve via NPCs.
  • Move deleter and reminder in Fuchsia City.
  • Experience bar in battles, improved move info box, “Run” shortcut with B.
  • Exp.All toggle from the bag.
  • Faster dialogues in Game Corner and other areas.
  • New nurse room in SS. Anne.
  • Pokémon stats, DVs, and Stat.Exp viewable at the Pokémon Academy.
  • Poké Beeper alerts when your box is nearly full.

Version Differences: Minimal; primarily encounter rarity, GBC/SGB color palettes, and Game Corner slot visuals.

Known Bugs & Issues

  • Link cable functionalities are untested.
  • Version differences are minimal; Red/Green share some encounter tables, and Super Game Boy palettes vary.
  • Some legacy bugs from the base game may persist but are largely improved or fixed.
