About This ROM Hack

This repository contains a modified version of Pokémon Crystal, updated to handle 16-bit indexes. It is based on pokecrystal16 and the original PokéCrystal disassembly.

The goal of this hack is to expand the content and mechanics of Pokémon Crystal while maintaining the Game Boy Color experience. It introduces Pokémon from later generations, modern mechanics like the physical/special split, and quality-of-life improvements, providing a smoother and more engaging gameplay experience.

Key Features

  • Expanded Pokémon & Mechanics – Includes Pokémon from later generations, regional forms, and several Gold/Silver beta Pokémon.
  • Improved Wild Encounters & Trainer Parties – Provides a smoother and slightly more challenging level curve.
  • Moves & Types – Over 600 moves (including later-generation and original moves), Fairy type, and physical/special split.
  • Quality-of-Life Enhancements – Move reminder in Blackthorn City, expanded Viridian Forest & Seafoam Islands, 99 infinitely reusable TMs, new bag pockets, and shared inventories in marts.
  • Experience System – Gen 6+ style experience system with toggles in the options menu.
  • Visual & Customization Options – Starters randomly selected from all generations, gender differences, random colors for certain Pokémon, and newer Poké Ball types.
  • Rematches & Postgame Content – Rematches against Gym Leaders and Kimono Girls, Pokédex opening after evolutions/hatching, and various additional upgrades, fixes, and tweaks.

Known Bugs & Issues

  • Many Pokémon do not have a unique cry.
  • Some moves use default animations.
  • PC storage limits prevent holding all available Pokémon simultaneously; this hack prioritizes variety over living dex completion.
  • For a complete list of other known issues, see the Issues section in the repository.
