About This ROM Hack
Pokémon Saiph is the first entry in the VytroVerse, a ROM hack series born from the remnants of several cancelled projects. It represents a “double reboot”: a reimagining of an unreleased reboot of a cancelled hack called Pokémon Star Red.
Development of Saiph began after the cancellation of Pokémon Black Advance. Concepts from older projects were salvaged, redesigned, and merged into something new, ultimately becoming Pokémon Saiph. While the game is fully playable and complete, the developer has openly acknowledged its flaws and considers a future remake highly likely.
Despite these shortcomings, Pokémon Saiph stands as a fully realized story-driven adventure with custom mechanics, a new region, and ambitious narrative scope.
Story Overview
Warning: Heavy spoilers for Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia
The story takes place several years after the events of Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia. After the Shadow Crystal was purified, scientists discovered how to harness its energy as a power source. Fearing its presence, the citizens of Almia pushed for its removal, and the crystal was eventually sold to Hoenn.
The crystal was installed in a renovated Old Mauville Power Plant, where it functioned peacefully—until disaster struck. The plant exploded, releasing massive radiation across western Hoenn. As a result, entire regions were evacuated, including Littleroot Town. Refugees were relocated to the nearby Colen Region, a previously unknown land.
The Shadow Crystal was secretly transferred to a hidden laboratory in Colen and classified as a top-secret weapon.
Ten years later, you finally receive your first Pokémon and begin your journey. As you explore Colen, you encounter Team Void, a mysterious organization tied directly to the Shadow Crystal. It is revealed that victims trapped within Darkrai’s void were sealed inside the crystal—including Shenow’s missing father.
Team Void plans to reclaim the crystal, harness Darkrai’s power, and rule the world. To stop them, you must uncover the truth behind the crystal, confront lingering shadows of the past, and restore peace to Colen—and possibly beyond. The solution may lie in methods once used by Rangers long ago.
