About This ROM Hack

Pokémon Grape is an ambitious Game Boy ROM hack built on Pokémon Red that dramatically expands the original game with new regions, new mechanics, additional Pokémon, and a wide variety of gameplay systems that normally exist only in later Pokémon generations.

Despite being based on a Generation I Game Boy engine, the hack pushes the limits of what is technically possible in that framework. It introduces features such as new Pokémon types, the physical/special split, expanded items, and many mechanics inspired by later Pokémon games.

The hack does not simply modify Kanto. Instead, it introduces entirely new regions with new maps, dungeons, puzzles, and quests, turning the experience into something much larger than the original Pokémon Red.

Pokémon Grape is designed to feel like a full alternate Pokémon adventure, combining exploration, battles, puzzles, and story elements while maintaining the classic Game Boy aesthetic.

Story Overview

The story takes place in 1999, focusing on a protagonist who is a former baseball player unexpectedly drawn into a dangerous conflict involving the Pokémon League.

Two regions—Frejo and Kelgo—are competing for control of the Pokémon League. The rivalry between these regions escalates into a deadly competition that forces the player into the center of the conflict.

At the same time, remnants of Team Rocket, who fled the Kanto region after their earlier defeats, have resurfaced. These former members have joined a mysterious cult that is planning to disrupt the balance of the Pokémon world.
