About This ROM Hack
Pokémon Epoch Emerald is an enhancement hack that aims to preserve the core feel of Pokémon Emerald while improving variety, challenge, and overall gameplay flow. Rather than reinventing Hoenn with a brand-new story, the project focuses on modernizing the original adventure through expanded Pokémon availability, battle improvements, gameplay balancing, and numerous quality-of-life features.
Every Pokémon from Generations I through III is obtainable, while Generation IV evolutions have been incorporated to expand team-building options. Battles against Gym Leaders, rivals, and villain team bosses have all been strengthened to provide a more engaging challenge without straying too far from Emerald's original progression.
The hack also introduces several modern conveniences, including reusable TMs, automatic field move usage, a free Move Relearner, catch-up experience mechanics, improved fishing, bike swapping, and numerous interface improvements. The overall goal is to deliver an Emerald experience that feels familiar but significantly smoother and more rewarding to play.
Key Features
- Complete Generation I–III Pokédex: Every Pokémon from Generations I through III is obtainable during a single playthrough.
- Generation IV Evolutions: Later evolutions introduced in Generation IV have been added, expanding team-building possibilities for many classic Pokémon.
- Physical/Special Split: Battles use the modern move classification system, separating moves by their individual properties instead of their type.
- Enhanced Boss Battles: Gym Leaders, rival battles, and evil team leaders have all received stronger teams and improved encounters to provide a greater challenge.
- New Moves Added: Several later-generation moves, including Night Slash and Energy Ball, have been introduced.
- Bug-Type Rework: Bug-type Pokémon have received stat adjustments to improve their overall viability.
- Poison-Type Rebalancing: Poison-type Pokémon have also been rebalanced to improve their usefulness.
- Fighting-Type Balance Adjustment: Fighting-type no longer resists Bug-type, altering several important battle matchups.
- New Routes: Additional areas have been added to expand exploration beyond the original Emerald map.
- All Legendary Pokémon Available: Legendary Pokémon from the supported generations are obtainable within the game.
- Chain Repels: Repels automatically continue when one expires, reducing menu interruptions.
- Bike Swapping: Players can instantly switch between the Mach Bike and Acro Bike by pressing the A button while standing still, eliminating the need to revisit bike shops.
- Colored Move Categories: Move names are color-coded during battle—red for Physical moves, blue for Special moves, and black for Status moves—for improved readability.
- Automatic Item Overflow: Extra items that exceed bag limits are automatically sent to the PC.
- Improved Fishing: Every fishing attempt results in a successful encounter, removing the timing minigame entirely.
- Automatic Field Moves: HM field actions such as Cut, Surf, and similar moves activate automatically without requiring Pokémon to permanently learn them.
- Free Move Relearner: A Move Relearner is available in Mauville City at no cost.
- Reusable TMs: Technical Machines can be used infinitely.
- Catch-Up Experience System: Lower-level Pokémon gain additional experience based on the level difference between them and the highest-level Pokémon in the player's party, making team rotation much easier.
- Removed PokéNav Tutorial: The introductory PokéNav tutorial has been removed to streamline the early game.
- Future Planned Updates: The developer plans to add an option to toggle the catch-up EXP system and introduce a more challenging endgame in future releases.
