About This ROM Hack

Pokémon Static Yellow is a Generation 1–focused ROM hack designed to modernize Pokémon Yellow without sacrificing the original Gen 1 “vibe.” Built using disassembly-based binary edits, the hack stays visually and tonally faithful to classic Pokémon while introducing a huge number of quality-of-life improvements, bug fixes, balance changes, and optional modern conveniences.

The project is heavily inspired by influential Gen 1 hacks such as Red++, Blue Kaizo, and other disassembly-based projects that demonstrated just how far Gen 1 could be pushed without losing its identity. The result is a polished, feature-rich Yellow experience that feels familiar, flexible, and far less frustrating than the original release.

Story Overview

While the core plot remains intact, the world around it has been heavily refined. Trainer teams are smarter and more varied, Gym Leaders are stronger, post-game content is expanded, and many classic limitations—such as trade-only evolutions and one-time TMs—have been removed. The focus is not on rewriting the story, but on making the original adventure smoother, deeper, and more rewarding to play from start to finish.

Key Features

  • Gen 1 Authenticity Preserved: The game retains the look, sound, and feel of classic Pokémon Yellow while offering optional Gen 2-style graphics and sprites.
  • Complete Pokédex Without Trading: All 151 Pokémon can be obtained in a single playthrough, including Mew. Trade evolutions now evolve by level-up or via an in-game NPC.
  • Massive Pokédex Overhaul: The Pokédex now includes learnsets, evolutions, a built-in Movedex, wild encounter data for land, water, and fishing rods, and accurate location tracking.
  • Modern Quality-of-Life Improvements: Infinite reusable TMs, auto HM usage, deletable HMs, expanded bag space, sortable inventory, EXP bar, EXP All as a toggleable key item, and clearer PC box management.
  • Improved Battles and AI: Trainers have smarter AI, better movesets, mixed teams, perfect DVs, rebalanced levels, and stronger Gym Leaders, Rivals, Rockets, and Elite Four members.
  • Expanded Post-Game Content: Gym Leader rematches, Elite Four rematches, special post-game battles (including Oak, Joy, and Jenny), and additional shops and services unlocked after progression milestones.
  • Enhanced World Interactions: Surfboards without Pokémon, flying Pikachu, expanded Safari Zone modes, restored intro elements, improved elevators, SS Anne improvements, overworld leader sprites, and more.
  • Extensive Bug Fixes: Numerous Gen 1 engine bugs are corrected, including sleep mechanics, move accuracy quirks, Swift interactions, stat drops, and item behavior.

Known Bugs & Issues

  • No major known bugs are currently documented.
  • Due to the extensive scope of engine modifications, minor edge-case issues may still exist, but the hack prioritizes stability and polish. Bug fixes and engine corrections are a core design focus of the project.
