About This ROM Hack

Pokémon GBC Celebrations is a large-scale disassembly project built on the pret Pokémon Red/Blue/Green codebase. Rather than being a traditional “story hack,” this project focuses on expanding, restoring, and modernizing Generation I gameplay while preserving its original identity.

The project introduces extensive quality-of-life improvements, visual upgrades, optional Gen 2 assets, restored cut content, rebalanced trainers, and numerous engine fixes. Multiple build configurations are supported, allowing players to customize their experience through compile-time options.

This project exists both as a playable ROM hack and as a technical showcase of what is possible with the Pokémon RBY disassembly.

Key Features

Dual Audio & Feature Branches: Two main branches are provided: one using classic RBY audio with expanded 60-slot bag space, and another using hybrid RBY/GSC audio with a 20-slot bag and a portable PC system.

Full Color Support: The game runs fully in color on Game Boy Color, including updated overworld sprites, party icons, and UI elements.

Gen 1 & Gen 2 Asset Toggle: Players can switch between Generation I and Generation II sprites and audio, offering multiple visual and auditory styles.

Gameplay Restoration & Expansion: All 151 Pokémon are obtainable without trading, including restored events such as Mew under the truck and the ability to obtain both Mt. Moon fossils.

Modernized Pokédex: The Pokédex now displays base stats, learnsets, move descriptions, wild encounter data by terrain (land, water, rods), and remembers cursor position.

Trainer & Battle Enhancements: Gym Leaders, Elite Four, Rockets, rivals, and other trainers have reworked teams, improved AI, and stronger movesets. Post-game rematches are included.

Quality of Life Improvements: Reusable TMs, auto HM usage, EXP All toggle, sortable bag, surrender option in battle, portable PC, daycare PC access, bicycle hotkey, and many interface upgrades.

Engine Fixes & Balance Updates: Sleep mechanics function like Gen 2, Ghost is super-effective against Psychic, Gust and Karate Chop have corrected types, and numerous Gen 1 bugs are fixed or restored intentionally (including MissingNo. and the Mew glitch).

Optional Visual & Map Variants: A snowy overworld map and alternate color palettes can be enabled via configuration.

Known Bugs & Issues

  • Some classic Generation I glitches (such as MissingNo.) are intentionally restored.
  • As a disassembly project, occasional edge-case bugs may still exist depending on build configuration.
  • Save compatibility may vary between different branches or custom builds.
