Starters & Legendaries

Starter Pokémon

Starters are obtained differently from other Pokémon. Three basic forms can be received from Harlequins, with the rest catchable in their middle forms inside Hidden Grottos. Which starter a Harlequin offers depends on the current season.

Note that you can only receive one starter per Harlequin. The remaining three from each group must be found individually in the Hidden Grottos. Full Hidden Grotto encounter lists are in the Wild List document.

First Starter Gift — Virbank City

  • Spring: Squirtle (Water, Lv. 10) — middle form Wartortle in Route 5 Grotto
  • Summer: Cyndaquil (Fire, Lv. 10) — middle form Quilava in Route 6 Cave Grotto
  • Autumn: Treecko (Grass, Lv. 10) — middle form Grovyle in Lostlorn Forest Grotto
  • Winter: Piplup (Water, Lv. 10) — middle form Prinplup in left Route 13 Grotto

Second Starter Gift — Castelia City

There are two Harlequins in Castelia City who give starters — make sure to find both!

  • Spring: Torchic (Fire, Lv. 10) — middle form Combusken in Route 6 Cave Grotto
  • Summer: Bulbasaur (Grass/Poison, Lv. 10) — middle form Ivysaur in Lostlorn Forest Grotto
  • Autumn: Totodile (Water, Lv. 10) — middle form Croconaw in Route 5 Grotto
  • Winter: Charmander (Fire, Lv. 10) — middle form Charmeleon in Route 7 Grotto

Third Starter Gift — Castelia City

Again, remember there are two Harlequins here — don't miss the second one!

  • Spring: Turtwig (Grass, Lv. 10) — middle form Grotle in Route 6 Field Grotto
  • Summer: Mudkip (Water, Lv. 10) — middle form Marshtomp in left Route 13 Grotto
  • Autumn: Chimchar (Fire, Lv. 10) — middle form Monferno in Route 7 Grotto
  • Winter: Chikorita (Grass, Lv. 10) — middle form Bayleef in Route 6 Field Grotto

Legendary Pokémon

Unlike in Blaze Black and Volt White, where having legendaries appear in the wild felt aesthetically out of place, BB2 and VW2 handle this more elegantly — legendaries now appear on the map using their overworld sprites. Their rules are largely based on Spirit Gold, as scripting to Sacred Gold & Storm Silver's level isn't currently possible due to the lack of a scripting tool. Most legendaries only appear after talking to a specific person or performing a certain action.

Phione is not counted as a legendary here and is simply found in the wild as normal.

Legendary Activators

There are two key NPCs that unlock the majority of legendaries:

Veteran in Humilau City's Pokémon Center — available from the start, accessible after your seventh badge. Talking to him unlocks most of the 580 base stat total legendaries new to the game: Articuno, Zapdos, Moltres, Raikou, Entei, Suicune, Tornadus, Thundurus, and Keldeo.

Veteran in Giant Chasm — only appears after you've battled the original Kyurem (the capturable one, not Black or White Kyurem). Talking to him reveals all remaining legendaries not yet mentioned: Mewtwo, Mew, Lugia, Ho-Oh, Celebi, Latias, Latios, Rayquaza, Deoxys, Reshiram, Zekrom, Landorus, Meloetta, and Genesect.

Heatran event — battling Heatran causes both Kyogre and Groudon to appear in their respective locations. Groudon shares Heatran's map, which is the main reason this link exists.

Registeel & Regice — the Iron Key and Iceberg Key are obtained by talking to a female Veteran in one of the corners of the Sealed Chamber's main room. Regirock itself no longer gives out keys, but this new method lets you get both keys in both versions, making all three Regis and Regigigas obtainable.

There are no additional prerequisites for any legendaries originally found in B2W2, nor for Arceus, Jirachi, Manaphy, or Victini.

#384 Rayquaza — Lv. 75, in Dragonspiral Tower (Giant Chasm Veteran)

#385 Jirachi — Lv. 65, takes the Lati twins' original place in the Dreamyard. Appears as soon as you enter for the first time, after the chase.

#386 Deoxys — Lv. 68, in Giant Chasm (Giant Chasm Veteran)

#480 Uxie / #481 Mesprit / #482 Azelf — All Lv. 65, work exactly the same as in the original B2W2.

#483 Dialga / #484 Palkia — Both Lv. 75, appear within Dragonspiral Tower (Giant Chasm Veteran)

#485 Heatran — Lv. 68, same as in B2W2. Battling it is the key to unlocking Groudon and Kyogre.

#487 Giratina — Lv. 75, in Dragonspiral Tower (Giant Chasm Veteran)

#488 Cresselia — Lv. 68, same system as in B2W2. Battling her is the key to unlocking Darkrai.

#490 Manaphy — Talk to the breeder in the gatehouse between Nacrene City and Route 3 to receive it as an Egg. Hatches in approximately 2,560 steps.

#491 Darkrai — Lv. 68, appears in the back room of the Strange House after you've battled Cresselia.

#492 Shaymin — Lv. 65, on a high riverbank on Route 14 (Giant Chasm Veteran)

#493 Arceus — Lv. 80, found in the Nature Preserve as a replacement for the Haxorus that appeared there in B2W2. As a bonus, it's still a shiny Pokémon — a golden Arceus. Fifth-generation scripting limitations prevent a more elaborate event like the one in Sacred Gold & Storm Silver, unfortunately.

#494 Victini — Lv. 15, back in Liberty Tower Garden, accessible right from the start of the game. This means you can incorporate Victini into your main team, just as was possible in the original Black & White with an early Liberty Ticket.

#638 Cobalion — Lv. 50 on first encounter, Route 13. Same rules as before.

#639 Terrakion — Lv. 50 on first encounter, Route 22. Same rules as before.

#640 Virizion — Lv. 50 on first encounter, Route 11. Same rules as before.

#641 Tornadus — Lv. 50, on Route 6 (Humilau Veteran). Appears shiny and in its Therian Forme.

#642 Thundurus — Lv. 50, on Route 9 (Humilau Veteran). Appears shiny and in its Therian Forme.

#643 Reshiram / #644 Zekrom — Both Lv. 75, catchable in Dragonspiral Tower (Giant Chasm Veteran), in addition to their rooftop appearance. Both appear shiny.

#645 Landorus — Lv. 70, in Abundant Shrine (Giant Chasm Veteran). Appears shiny and in its Therian Forme.

#646 Kyurem — Lv. 75, in Giant Chasm, same rules as before — must battle Reshiram or Zekrom atop Dragonspiral Tower first. Battling Kyurem is essential, as it causes the Giant Chasm Veteran to appear, who in turn unlocks many other legendaries.

#647 Keldeo — Lv. 50, in Pledge Grove (Humilau Veteran)

#648 Meloetta — Lv. 65, in Nimbasa City's Pokémon Musical theatre (Giant Chasm Veteran). An unusual public venue for a legendary, but here we are.

#649 Genesect — Lv. 70, in P2 Laboratory (Giant Chasm Veteran)
