About This ROM Hack

Pokémon Pocket Gaiden is the prequel to Pocket Gaiden 2, built in the same 40-day window for the Relic Castle Winter Game Jam. It takes an even more unconventional approach than its successor.

You're not a trainer with Champion ambitions — you're a struggling berry farmer trying to escape poverty. That framing shapes everything. Poké Balls and Potions are scarce and worth holding onto; progression is slow and deliberate, and the setting feels grounded in a way most Pokémon games never attempt. It's survival-adjacent, built around limited resources and realistic rural struggle rather than badges and rivalries.

Built on pokeemerald, it has room for custom scripting and mechanics despite the short development window, and the result is something that feels genuinely personal. It's a small game with a specific story to tell, and it tells it well.

If Pocket Gaiden 2 felt different from what you're used to, this one goes even further in that direction.

Story Overview

"My name is Pulp. I'm a farmer in a rural, poor area in the middle of nowhere."

You play as Pulp — a berry farmer stuck in an isolated village in an unnamed region inspired by China. Life here doesn't move. Resources are scarce, opportunities are nonexistent, and the dream of something better feels permanently out of reach.

That something better, for Pulp, is Honzhu City — a thriving urban center where he believes his berry business could actually amount to something. But getting there isn't simple. His delivery truck has broken down, cutting off his only income. He doesn't have the money for the journey. And the world beyond his village is dangerous in ways that make every step forward feel like a gamble.

To have any shot at leaving, Pulp has to venture out — through the wild lands surrounding his home and into the mysterious Color Ruins, which hold their own unexplained secrets.

What makes the experience hit differently is how the world is framed. Poké Balls and Potions aren't conveniences here — they're luxuries. Every resource matters, every decision carries weight, and the struggle never lets up. It's a Pokémon story that feels genuinely grounded, told through the perspective of someone with nothing trying to build something.
