About This ROM Hack

This hack is designed as an anime-faithful experience, allowing players to relive the Orange Islands saga from the Pokémon animated series. The game prioritizes narrative flow, recognizable locations, and character-driven events over traditional Pokémon League structure, while still adapting gameplay to fit FireRed’s battle-focused mechanics.

Although labeled as a beta, version 5.7 is considered fully playable and content-complete, including major story arcs and the Movie 2000–inspired Shamouti Island event.

Story Overview

You play as Ash Ketchum from Pallet Town, shortly after his victory in the Indigo League. After returning home, Ash is given a new task by Professor Oak: travel to Valencia Island to retrieve a mysterious Poké Ball that Professor Ivy cannot send through the PC system.

What begins as a simple errand quickly evolves into a full adventure across the Orange Archipelago, mirroring the events of the Pokémon anime. Nearly all major Orange Islands episodes are represented in-game. Some are integrated as key story moments, while others appear as optional miniquests or side events. While inspired by the anime, not every episode is recreated one-to-one, with gameplay flow and pacing taking priority.

The Orange Archipelago: The game world includes several themed islands, each with its own geography, NPCs, wild Pokémon, trainers, and puzzles. Key islands include: Valencia Island, where the adventure begins, and early exploration unfolds
  • Pinkan Island: Recognizable from the anime for rare Pokémon
  • Sunburst Island: A central location with NPC hints and unique Pokémon
  • Fairchild Island: Accessible later with the Whirlpuller
  • Shamouti Island: Host to the Movie 2000 event
  • New Island: Unlockable after progressing the main story
Progression relies on both exploration and scripted story triggers, rather than traditional linear progression.

Key Features

  • The Orange Archipelago: Explore the Orange Islands, featuring anime-inspired locations, custom routes, and island-based progression.
  • Anime-Based Gym Challenge: Battle 4 Gym Leaders and earn the Orange League badges, adapted into traditional Pokémon battles rather than anime-style challenges.
  • Playable Anime Protagonist: Play directly as Ash Ketchum, following his journey instead of a custom trainer.
  • Pikachu Starter & Early Anime Pokémon: Start with Pikachu and gain access to several of Ash’s anime Pokémon earlier than usual.
  • Expanded Pokédex: Includes all Generation I Pokémon, plus Tracey’s Marill from Generation II.
  • Modern Battle Mechanics: Features a Physical / Special / Status split and other quality-of-life improvements.
  • Capture-Friendly Changes: Failed captures no longer consume Poké Balls.
  • Field Abilities via Items: Use items to activate Dive, Whirlpool, Rock Smash, and Rock Climb instead of HMs.
  • Custom Visuals: New sprites, tilesets, and maps built specifically for the Orange Islands setting.

Known Bugs & Issues

  • The Surfing Lapras overworld sprite may occasionally overlap with other sprites or fail to appear.
  • In rare cases, a super-effective Thunderbolt may cause an audio loop; restarting the game resolves the issue.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Who is this hack for?
A: This hack is ideal for fans of the Pokémon anime, especially the Orange Islands arc, who want a story-focused experience rather than a traditional Pokémon League journey.

Q: How do I get onto the cliffs of Pinkan Island?
A: Talk to the old lady in the Sunburst Island Pokémon Center. NPC dialogue often contains important hints.

Q: How do I pass the whirlpools to Fairchild Island?
A: After defeating Rudy, someone on Trovita Island will give you the Whirlpuller.

Q: How can I reach New Island?
A: Speak to Tracey in Pallet Town after completing the Shamouti Island event.

Q: Why are Pokémon in Valencia Park shiny?
A: They use alternate colors to match their anime appearances.

Q: Why can’t I climb waterfalls?
A: Waterfall is intentionally a battle-only move in this hack; the field effect was removed.

Q: How do I obtain Crystal Onix?
A: Crystal Onix becomes catchable after defeating the Orange League.

Q: Why are gym challenges normal Pokémon battles instead of anime challenges?
A: The hack is anime-inspired but not a 1:1 recreation. Traditional battles fit better within the FireRed engine.

Q: Why don’t Pokémon evolve via trading?
A: Trade evolutions occur at level 40 to ensure the Pokédex is completable without trading.

Q: Are Pokémon movesets anime-accurate?
A: Mostly Generation III–based, with select anime-inspired exceptions (e.g., Charizard learning Seismic Toss).
