About This ROM Hack
Pokémon Ancient Ruby & Sapphire is a Game Boy Color ROM hack that recreates the Hoenn region from Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire using the Pokémon Crystal engine. The project continues the long-running “Ancient” series concept, which attempts to adapt later-generation Pokémon regions and mechanics into the Gen 2-style engine.
Developed by a creator known for extensive sprite work in projects like Polished Crystal, this hack aims to faithfully recreate Hoenn with Game Boy Color visuals while adding modern improvements and mechanics inspired by Generation 3 and beyond.
The game includes over 250 Pokémon, new sprites, remixed music, and mechanics such as running shoes and dive. Many features from Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, and even Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire are planned or partially implemented.
At the moment, the project is in an early alpha stage and only includes the beginning portion of the Hoenn adventure.
Story Overview
Pokémon Ancient Ruby & Sapphire follows the familiar storyline of the Hoenn region. Players begin their adventure as a new trainer who has just moved to Hoenn and sets out to explore the region, catch Pokémon, and challenge Gym Leaders.
Because the current build is an early alpha, the playable story currently ends around Petalburg Woods.
