About This ROM Hack
Pokémon Project: Pi is a complete gameplay overhaul of Pokémon FireRed that focuses on delivering a balanced, modernized, and replayable Kanto adventure rather than simply increasing the game's difficulty. Built using CFRU, the project introduces an entirely new 175-Pokémon regional Pokédex, extensive Pokémon rebalancing, graphical improvements, and numerous quality-of-life features while remaining faithful to the spirit of the original FireRed.
Every Pokémon included in the regional Pokédex is obtainable during a single playthrough, eliminating version exclusives and unnecessary grinding. Rather than becoming a difficulty hack, Project: Pi emphasizes fair progression, carefully designed encounters, mandatory badge-based level caps, and meaningful team-building choices.
The game is fully playable through the Elite Four and includes an additional post-game event. Nearly every gameplay system has received attention, from battle mechanics and encounter design to UI improvements, evolution methods, item availability, and progression flow.
Key Features
- Custom 175-Pokémon Regional Pokédex: A completely redesigned regional Pokédex featuring 175 carefully selected Pokémon, all obtainable within a single playthrough.
- Complete Pokémon Rebalancing: Every available Pokémon has been adjusted through stat changes, learnset revisions, ability changes, and balance improvements to ensure each species has a meaningful role.
- Mandatory Badge-Based Level Caps: Progression is balanced through gym badge level caps instead of artificial difficulty spikes.
- Physical/Special Split: Modern battle mechanics have been fully implemented.
- Custom Type Changes: Numerous Pokémon receive new typings alongside updated sprites that reflect their revised identities.
- Single Ability System: Each Pokémon now has one carefully selected ability to simplify balancing and strengthen individual roles.
- Modern HM System: HMs never need to be taught. Any compatible Pokémon can use field moves once the HM and required badge have been obtained.
- Only Three Required HMs: Progression only requires Cut, Surf, and Fly, greatly reducing HM dependency.
- Reusable TMs & Forgettable HMs: TMs can be used infinitely, while HMs can be forgotten normally.
- Effort Values Removed: EV training has been completely eliminated to create a more balanced experience.
- Improved Encounter System: Wild encounters are redesigned to make finding every Pokémon in an area significantly less frustrating.
- Built-In Nuzlocke Mode: Players can activate an integrated Nuzlocke mode before receiving the Pokédex, complete with enforced rules and challenge tracking.
- Gen VI Exp. Share: Modern experience sharing becomes available early in the adventure.
- Anti-Grind Features: Pokémon award triple Base Experience, Rare Candies become purchasable, and progression is designed to minimize repetitive grinding.
- Higher Shiny Odds: Shiny encounter rates are dramatically increased, with different rates for standard and Nuzlocke play.
- Quality-of-Life Improvements: Includes indoor running, auto-run, Black & White Repel system, bag sorting, multiple registered items, quick Poké Ball reuse, improved Pokédex information, nature stat coloring, and removal of references to unavailable Pokémon.
- Graphical Overhaul: Features a redesigned user interface, day and night lighting effects, updated overworld palettes, custom battle backgrounds, recolored shiny Pokémon, improved NPC sprites, enhanced overworld sprites, trainer mugshots, and an entirely new Pokédex completion diploma.
- Gameplay Progression Changes: Various important NPCs, key items, rods, HMs, and progression events have been relocated or redesigned to improve game flow.
