About This ROM Hack

Pokemon Venom Purple is a heavily expanded FireRed-based ROM hack built around the idea of modernizing Kanto while still keeping the overall structure and identity of the original Generation 1 experience intact. Instead of turning Kanto into a completely different game, the project focuses on expanding what already existed through Mega Evolution, regional forms, improved balancing, expanded locations, updated mechanics, and broader Pokémon variety while still feeling recognizable to longtime fans of classic Pokémon.

One of the hack’s defining design choices is that the roster remains centered almost entirely around Generation 1 Pokémon and their related evolutions or regional variants. That means you will encounter Pokémon like Sylveon, Perrserker, Galarian Weezing, Alolan Marowak, and Annihilape, but only because they connect directly to original Kanto species. There are no Fakemon, and the creator specifically states that the game was designed to preserve an authentic Pokémon feel.

The hack also puts major emphasis on improving weaker Pokémon and making more teams viable. Many underused Pokémon received buffs through better learnsets, earlier availability, typing changes, ability changes, stat shifts, and expanded move coverage. The inclusion of the Physical/Special Split further modernizes combat and allows many classic Pokémon to function more effectively than they did in vanilla FireRed.

Several areas of Kanto and the Sevii Islands have been expanded with entirely new sections, encounters, trainers, and post-game rematches. The creator also added quality-of-life systems including easier evolution methods, purchasable evolution stones, EV and nature management systems, reusable competitive tools, and modern Poké Ball availability.

This was also the developer’s first ROM hack project, which gives the game a very passion-driven feel throughout. The project openly credits Complete FireRed Upgrade (CFRU), DPE, HexManiac Advance, and several community creators for helping make many of the modern systems possible.

Key Features

  • Expanded Gen 1-Focused Pokédex: The game includes Pokémon from later generations only if they are directly connected to Kanto species, such as evolutions or regional variants. This keeps the roster feeling authentic to Generation 1 while still modernizing team variety.
  • Mega Evolution: Mega Evolution is fully implemented, with Mega Stones available later in the game and additional Mega-focused encounters added throughout Victory Road and rematches.
  • Regional Forms Integration: Alolan and Galarian forms are naturally integrated into Kanto and the Sevii Islands rather than feeling tacked on. Pokémon like Alolan Marowak, Galarian Weezing, and Galarian Legendary Birds are obtainable through specific locations and evolution methods.
  • Physical/Special Split: Modern battle mechanics are included, allowing many classic Pokémon to become far more viable than they were in the original FireRed.
  • Massive Move Rebalancing: Hundreds of move changes were made across the game. Accuracy, power, typing, effects, and utility were adjusted to make older moves more useful and modern-feeling.
  • Pokemon Rebalancing: Many weaker Pokémon received improved stats, typings, abilities, move pools, or earlier availability to improve overall roster balance.
  • Custom Ability Changes: Certain Pokémon received entirely new abilities, including weather-setting legendary birds and improved hidden abilities for older species.
  • Expanded Kanto Areas: Multiple classic locations now feature additional sections, hidden zones, stronger encounters, and new exploration rewards.
  • New Legendary Locations: Legendary encounters have been redistributed and expanded, including Galarian Legendary Birds and a catchable Mew encounter.
  • Modern Evolution Methods: Trade evolutions were removed in favor of stones, held items, or Link Stones to make single-player progression smoother.
  • Expanded Celadon Department Store: The department store now functions almost like a modern competitive utility center with EV berries, Ability items, Nature systems, Poké Balls, Mega Stones, vitamins, and more.
  • Gym Leader and Elite Four Rematches: Post-game rematches significantly upgrade major trainer teams and provide stronger late-game battles.
  • Expanded Victory Road: Victory Road now contains additional trainers, type specialists, Mega Evolution battles, and stronger evolved Pokémon not used elsewhere in the game.
  • Regional Evolution Logic: Pokémon caught in certain areas evolve into regional variants depending on where they were obtained, adding unique progression mechanics.
  • QoL Improvements: Modern conveniences include purchasable competitive items, updated evolution systems, expanded Poké Ball access, improved breeding functionality, and easier team customization.
  • Difficulty Enhancement: Most trainers have updated or expanded teams, creating a noticeably harder experience than vanilla FireRed without becoming a full Kaizo-style hack.

Known Bugs & Issues

  • The provided information does not mention any major known bugs, but the creator states that additional balancing updates and bug fixes are planned for future versions. Since this was the developer’s first ROM hack project, players may occasionally encounter minor inconsistencies or unfinished balancing elements.
  • The post-game also appears to still be evolving, with possible future content planned including a Porygon/Missingno-related event.
