About This ROM Hack
Pokémon Pitch Black was released on December 19, 2025 by Archie. The hack modifies the standard battle experience by turning every opponent into a mysterious Ghost form, making battles feel more like a guessing game. Information about additional versions or updates is limited, and the creator has stated that v1.0 is the final version.
Pokémon Pitch Black completely changes how battles work. Every Pokémon in the game — including wild encounters and trainer Pokémon — appears as a Ghost Marowak sprite during battle.
Because of this, players cannot immediately tell what Pokémon they are fighting. The only way to discover the opponent’s identity is to defeat it in battle, turning every encounter into a guessing game similar to the classic “Who’s That Pokémon?” segment from the anime.
The hack is intended to be played with randomization enabled, which makes identifying each Pokémon even harder. Without randomization, experienced players could memorize encounter patterns. With randomization, the game becomes more of a mystery challenge.
The creator notes that the hack was made at the request of streamer Arex, and it is meant to be a short, experimental gameplay twist rather than a large-scale overhaul.
Key Features
- Ghost Encounter Gimmick: Every Pokémon in the game appears as the ghostly Marowak sprite in battle, hiding its true identity until defeated.
- “Who’s That Pokémon?” Gameplay: Battles become a deduction game where players must figure out what Pokémon they are fighting based on moves, stats, and behavior.
- Randomizer-Focused Design: The hack is intended to be played with a compatible randomizer so that encounters are unpredictable and the guessing mechanic remains challenging.
- Streamer-Inspired Concept: The hack was created specifically at the request of streamer Arex, making it a unique challenge-style project.
- Vanilla-Style Adventure: Aside from the ghost battle mechanic, most gameplay systems follow the structure of the original FireRed adventure.
Known Bugs & Issues
- Broken Randomize TM Option: The “Randomize TMs” option in the compatible randomizer does not work correctly.
- External Randomizer Requirement: The hack requires a special fork of the Universal Pokémon Randomizer designed for decomp hacks. Standard randomizers may not work correctly.
- Limited Support: The creator has stated there are no planned updates or official support channels, so fixes are unlikely.
- Aside from these issues, no major gameplay-breaking bugs are specifically documented.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is the main gimmick of Pokémon Pitch Black?
A: Every Pokémon appears as a Ghost Marowak during battle, hiding its true identity until you defeat it.
Q: Does the game have a new story or region?
A: No. The hack mainly modifies the battle system while keeping the structure of the original Pokémon FireRed.
Q: Why should the game be played with a randomizer?
A: Randomization prevents players from memorizing encounters and makes the “Who’s That Pokémon?” mechanic much more challenging.
Q: Can I use the normal Universal Pokémon Randomizer?
A: No. The hack requires a special fork of the randomizer designed for decomp-based ROM hacks.
Q: What randomizer settings are recommended?
A: It is recommended not to randomize moves, abilities, stats, or similar attributes, because doing so removes the clues that help identify each Pokémon.
Q: Who is this hack for?
A: Players who enjoy unusual gameplay twists, challenge runs, or mystery-style battles where they must identify Pokémon without seeing them.
