About This ROM Hack

Pokémon Modern Crystal isn't trying to reinvent Crystal — it's trying to give you more control over how you experience it.

The main addition is an options menu at the start of a new game where you can configure randomizers, difficulty modifiers, and a range of convenience tweaks before you even take your first step. It's a small thing structurally, but it makes the hack noticeably more flexible than a standard Crystal playthrough — especially for Nuzlockes or randomized runs where you'd normally need a separate tool to set things up.

Beyond that, there's a solid spread of quality-of-life improvements throughout: faster gameplay flow, better UI information, and general modernization that brings Gen 2 closer to current standards without stripping out what makes it feel like Crystal.

It's an alpha, so not everything planned is in yet. But the core systems — especially the options menu — are already working well. The foundation is there, it's just not fully built out yet.

Key Features

  • New Game Options Menu: Configure gameplay settings at the start, including randomizers, difficulty modifiers, and QoL features across multiple pages.
  • Built-in Randomizers: Randomize wild encounters, starters, trainer battles (with preserved levels), items, berries, and even nicknames.
  • Challenge Mode Options: Includes permadeath, reset on party wipe, adjustable EXP multipliers, poison survival settings, and Rare Candy shop options.
  • TM Mode Customization: Choose between standard consumable TMs or unlimited-use TMs.
  • Modern Shiny System: Updated shiny odds (1/4096) with a visible in-battle indicator for shiny encounters.
  • Enhanced Battle UI: FIGHT menu shows move power and effectiveness; Hidden Power displays its actual type.
  • Expanded Stats Screen: Additional page showing DVs, Pokérus status, and friendship values.
  • QoL Gameplay Improvements: Faster Pokémon Center healing, smarter NPC dialogue, optional catching tutorial, and automatic bike-speed movement.
  • HM Improvements: HM moves can be overwritten without needing a Move Deleter.
  • Self-Trade NPC: Allows evolution of trade-based Pokémon without needing another game.
  • Party Management Shortcuts: Use SELECT to reorder Pokémon quickly in the party menu.
  • Early Game Improvements: All Pokémon have at least one attacking move at level 5 for smoother starts.
