About This ROM Hack

Pokémon Emerald Seaglass is a fan-made ROM hack of Pokémon Emerald developed by Nemo622, designed to reimagine Hoenn through a strong retro lens while integrating modern Pokémon mechanics. The hack blends a late-90s RPG aesthetic—heavily inspired by Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal—with contemporary battle systems, expanded Pokémon availability, and numerous quality-of-life improvements.

Rather than focusing solely on difficulty, Emerald Seaglass prioritizes atmosphere, exploration, and variety. Familiar locations have been subtly expanded, optional systems are layered on top of the core experience, and nearly every Pokémon has been adjusted in some way to feel relevant throughout the game.

Story Overview

Alongside the core Emerald narrative, Seaglass integrates new legendary Pokémon quests and optional storylines that expand the world without replacing the original plot. Legendary encounters are no longer limited to late-game or event-exclusive content; instead, many are unlocked through exploration, NPC interactions, and a dedicated questline tied to Mossdeep City.

These additions are designed to feel like a natural extension of Emerald’s story rather than a rewrite, rewarding curiosity and side exploration while preserving the original pacing and structure of the game.

Key Features

Complete Retro Visual Overhaul:
  • The entire game features custom graphics inspired by 90s RPGs and Generation 2 Pokémon titles. Pokémon sprites are redesigned in a Game Boy Color style, while overworld NPCs and environments use bold outlines and refined tilesets to improve readability and visual identity.

Expanded Pokémon Availability:
  • All Pokémon from Generations 1–3 are obtainable within a single save file, alongside select cross-generation evolutions up to Generation 9 such as Weavile, Tinkaton, Annihilape, and Applin. Pokémon distribution is carefully balanced to avoid overcrowding early routes.

Type, Stat, and Balance Changes:
  • Many Pokémon have received type changes or stat adjustments to improve viability and variety. Examples include Butterfree becoming Bug/Psychic, Blastoise becoming Water/Steel, and Sunflora becoming Grass/Fire, encouraging new team compositions and strategies.

Modernized Battle System:
  • The hack includes the Physical/Special move split, Fairy-type implementation, updated movesets inspired by Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, and a party-wide EXP Share. A soft level cap system is used to reduce grinding while maintaining challenge.

Overworld Following Pokémon:
  • Pokémon can follow the player in the overworld, adding immersion and visual personality to the journey without affecting battle balance.

New Minigames and Activities:
  • Emerald Seaglass introduces several optional side activities, including the SCUBA Safari in Pacifidlog Town, Pinball minigames in Mauville and Mossdeep City, and the Rustboro Wishing Well, which functions as a gacha-style Pokémon summoning system using Wishing Stars.

Legendary Quests and Secrets:
  • All legendary Pokémon from Generations 1–3 are obtainable, many through unique conditions or side quests rather than simple static encounters. Additional easter-egg Pokémon, such as Spiky-Eared Pichu and other cross-generation species, are hidden behind optional content.

Extensive Quality-of-Life Improvements:
  • HM moves no longer take up move slots, type effectiveness is displayed during battle, Pokémon Box Link allows PC access anywhere, IVs and EVs can be viewed directly, and evolution items are widely obtainable through shops and quests.

Known Bugs & Issues

  • Battle Graphics Flicker: Occasional flickering may occur after turns; this was intentionally implemented to prevent freezes and animation crashes.
  • DexNav Stability Issues: The DexNav may rarely cause crashes, particularly in cave environments.
  • Temporary Level Display Bug: In rare cases, a Pokémon’s level may briefly display incorrectly during battle before returning to normal.
