About This ROM Hack
Pokemon Contemporary Emerald is a modernized version of Pokémon Emerald built using the pokeemerald decompilation and pokeemerald-expansion framework. The project was created as the developer’s first attempt at building a ROM hack using these tools, with the goal of refreshing the Hoenn experience while keeping the core structure of Emerald intact.
One of the biggest motivations behind the hack was visual variety. The developer wanted to avoid replaying Emerald with the same environments and therefore rebuilt much of the game's look using custom ORAS-inspired tilesets created by leob0505, giving the region a cleaner and more modern appearance.
Gameplay is also updated with many modern Pokémon features. The hack adds around 125 Pokémon families from later generations, introduces Gen 9 mechanics and learnsets, and includes a large number of quality-of-life improvements made possible through the pokeemerald-expansion project.
For players who prefer the classic Pokémon roster, the hack also provides a VANILLA patch, which keeps the original Emerald Pokémon encounters while still including the updated mechanics, visuals, and quality-of-life features.
