About This ROM Hack

Pokémon Primeval Black 2 is a challenging difficulty hack of Pokémon Black 2 designed to push players’ strategic skills to the limit while still maintaining a balanced and fair gameplay experience.

The hack introduces a unique regional restriction system that dramatically changes how battles play out. Enemy trainers use Pokémon primarily from the Sinnoh and Unova Pokédex, while the player is restricted to Pokémon originating from Kanto, Johto, and Hoenn. This creates a constant clash between two distinct generational groups and forces players to approach team building in a completely new way.

Inspired by the mechanics of Pokémon Vintage White, the project heavily modifies nearly every Pokémon in the game. Typings, abilities, movesets, and evolutions have been redesigned across the entire Pokédex (excluding most legendary Pokémon). These changes are intended to create more viable strategies while also introducing new challenges.

To maintain the intended difficulty curve, the hack removes many traditional advantages players normally rely on. Effort Values (EVs) are completely disabled, weather-based abilities are banned, and enemy trainers use optimized teams with perfect IVs and competitive items.

The project is currently in beta testing, meaning gameplay systems, balancing, and trainer encounters may continue to change before the final release.

Key Features

  • Regional Pokémon Split System: Enemy trainers primarily use Pokémon from Sinnoh and Unova, while the player’s encounters are limited to Pokémon originating from Kanto, Johto, and Hoenn.
  • Full Pokémon Rebalancing: Typings, evolutions, abilities, and movepools have been redesigned for all 643 Pokémon (excluding most Legendary Pokémon) to improve balance and strategic diversity.
  • Champion-Level AI: The hack introduces an upgraded artificial intelligence system similar to the one seen in Pokemon Emerald Kaizo. This AI is capable of advanced decision-making, making trainer battles significantly more challenging.
  • Artificial Difficulty Systems: Trainers use competitive items, randomized natures, and perfect IVs, forcing players to build carefully planned teams to succeed.
  • No EV Mechanics: Effort Values are completely removed from the game. Players cannot gain EVs through battles, vitamins, wings, or battle items, ensuring a more controlled difficulty environment.
  • Weather Ability Restrictions: Weather-based abilities are banned and weather moves have only 1 PP, preventing weather strategies from dominating battles.
  • All Pokémon Catchable: Every Pokémon is obtainable within the game. Generation 4 and Generation 5 Pokémon become available in the post-game.
  • Permanent Spring Season: The game world remains locked to the Spring season, removing seasonal rotation mechanics.
  • Expanded Early Game Areas: Four additional early-game encounter locations are available, including Floccesy Town expansions, Pledge Grove, Liberty Garden, and Anville Town.
  • Rare Candy Economy System: Rare Candies are purchasable in Poké Marts for only 10 PokéDollars, reducing grinding while maintaining challenge.
  • Rebalanced Move System: Many moves have been reduced in power, removed, or redesigned to better fit the hack’s difficulty balance.
  • Steel Type Update: Steel typing now follows Generation 8 effectiveness rules, becoming neutral against Ghost and Dark types.
  • Shiny Rate Increase: Shiny encounter odds have been dramatically increased from 1/8192 to approximately 5/2048, roughly a twenty-times increase compared to the original game.
  • Hidden Grotto Improvements: Hidden Grottos have been rebalanced to reward patience while still relying on RNG mechanics.
  • New Required Battles: Additional mandatory trainer encounters have been added to maintain a consistent difficulty curve.
  • Optional Gift Pokémon and Items: Players can obtain various gift Pokémon and items from certain trainers throughout the game.
  • Legendary Encounter Restrictions: Legendary Pokémon are unavailable during the main story and become accessible only after defeating the Champion twice.
  • Happiness Boost on Capture: All Pokémon are caught with maximum happiness to reduce the time required for friendship evolutions.

Known Bugs & Issues

  • Because Pokémon Primeval Black 2 is currently in a beta testing phase, some bugs, balance issues, and incomplete systems may still exist.
  • The current Beta Phase 2 build is only playable up to the Plasma Frigate event near the Pokémon World Tournament, meaning the later sections of the game are still under development.
