About This ROM Hack
Pokémon SoulSilver Golden Edition is a quality-of-life ROM hack that enhances the original Pokémon SoulSilver experience without changing its core adventure. Rather than introducing a new region or storyline, the project focuses on improving many of the mechanics, visuals, and convenience features that players have come to expect from later Pokémon games.
Created as the developer's first ROM hack, the goal was to build a version of SoulSilver that could serve as a better replacement for the original release by adding features that many fans felt should have been included from the start. The result is a more polished adventure that keeps the classic Johto and Kanto journey intact while reducing unnecessary waiting, modernizing battle mechanics, and improving overall gameplay flow.
The hack updates move data to Generation 6 standards, brings Pokémon learnsets closer to Generation 8, incorporates later-generation base stat adjustments where applicable, restores several classic features, and introduces numerous quality-of-life improvements such as reusable TMs, easier evolution methods, free Move Tutors, and streamlined early-game progression. Visual improvements have also been made through updated mini sprites, edited Pokémon sprites, and the return of Kris as the female protagonist.
A separate optional patch is included with the download for players who want a smoother level progression throughout the game.
Key Features
- Generation 6 Mini Sprites: Every Pokémon now uses updated Generation 6 party menu mini sprites for a cleaner and more modern appearance.
- Faster Beginning: Your mother gives you the Pokégear immediately, and several opening cutscenes have been shortened to get you onto Route 29 much sooner.
- Generation 6 Move Data: All attacks have been updated with Generation 6 power, accuracy, PP, and related battle values where applicable.
- Modern Pokémon Learnsets: Pokémon learn moves based on learnsets that closely match Generation 8, giving many species access to more up-to-date moves throughout the game.
- Generation 6 Stat Adjustments: Pokémon whose base stats were officially changed in later generations have been updated to reflect those improvements.
- Kris Returns: Lyra has been replaced with Kris, and NPC dialogue has been updated to refer to her by name.
- Improved Pokémon Graphics: Numerous Pokémon sprites and palettes have been refined to better resemble their official artwork, with additional sprite clean-up included in later updates.
- Reusable TMs: Technical Machines can now be used an unlimited number of times, making team customization much more convenient.
- Free Move Relearner: Forgotten moves can be relearned without paying any Heart Scales or other costs.
- Free Move Tutors: Move Tutors have been relocated from the Battle Frontier to Cianwood City, Lake of Rage, and Pewter City, and their services are now completely free.
- Alternative Trade Evolutions: Pokémon that normally require held-item trades can now evolve by directly using the required item, while traditional trading remains supported.
- Covenant Orb: A new evolution item allows Kadabra, Machoke, Graveler, and Haunter to evolve without needing to trade.
- Improved Evolution Item Availability: Important evolution items such as Razor Fang, Razor Claw, Up-Grade, Electirizer, Magmarizer, Dubious Disc, and Protector have been redistributed to accessible in-game locations.
- Improved Apricorn System: Kurt immediately hands over completed Apricorn Poké Balls after crafting them, while Apricorn trees continue to regenerate every 24 hours.
- Generation 5 Repel System: When a Repel expires, the game asks whether you want to use another one automatically, removing the need to repeatedly reopen the Bag.
- Restored Game Corners: The Goldenrod and Celadon Game Corners have been redesigned to resemble their classic layouts from the original Gold and Silver. Voltorb Flip remains, but coins can once again be purchased.
- Expanded Prize Shops: Game Corner rewards have been rebalanced to include additional TMs, evolution stones, trade evolution items, Pokémon, and other useful rewards.
- Treasure Hunter Vendor: Completing the Team Rocket storyline unlocks a special vendor selling additional evolution stones.
- Original Coin Case Location: The Coin Case has been returned to the Goldenrod Underground, matching its location in the original Generation 2 games.
- GB Player from the Beginning: Your mother now gives you the GB Player at the start of the game instead of later in the adventure.
- Ruins of Alph Side Quest: Includes the additional Ruins of Alph side quest from Pokémon Sacred Gold and Storm Silver, with credit to Drayano.
- Custom Unown Sprites: Features 28 newly created custom sprites covering every Unown form.
- Optional Level Curve Patch: A separate patch is included for players who prefer smoother level progression throughout Johto and Kanto.
