About This ROM Hack

Pokémon Grass Jewel is a heavily expanded Pokémon Emerald-based ROM hack that reimagines the Hoenn region with a new storyline, updated mechanics, and a significantly broadened Pokémon roster. The game introduces a more modern Pokémon experience while still keeping the core structure of a classic Hoenn journey.

The story begins in Littleroot Town, but quickly shifts into a more active and character-driven narrative involving Professor Maple, his assistant Brendan or May, and a developing conflict with a group known as Team Dream. Unlike the original Emerald storyline, which focuses on natural disaster-level threats, Grass Jewel introduces a more structured villain organization with ideological motivations.

From early-game encounters like the Zigzagoon chase event to later post-game developments, the hack builds a continuous narrative that expands beyond the original Pokémon Emerald storyline.

The game also emphasizes mechanical modernization, bringing in newer-generation Pokémon, updated battle systems, and extensive quality-of-life improvements, making it feel closer to a modern Pokémon experience while still retaining its GBA roots.

Story Overview

The adventure begins in Littleroot Town, where the player is welcomed into the world by Professor Maple, the regional Pokémon professor. He is assisted by Brendan or May, the child of Professor Pine, who also serves as the player’s rival and companion throughout the journey.

Early on, Professor Maple is unexpectedly chased by a wild Zigzagoon, forcing the player into their first battle almost immediately. After assisting him, the player receives the Pokémon used in the encounter and is recruited to help with the Pokédex project.

However, the journey quickly expands beyond research. A group known as Team Dream, described as extremists, begins to influence events across the Hoenn region. Their actions gradually become a central threat, pushing the player into battles, exploration, and uncovering hidden motives behind their organization.

As the story progresses, the world opens up with new locations, redesigned routes, and expanded encounters. The narrative continues beyond the main storyline as well, introducing a post-game plot that further develops the conflict and world-building of Hoenn.
