About This ROM Hack

Pokémon FireRed Battle Edition is designed to make your return to Kanto significantly more challenging while still preserving the original structure and feel of FireRed. Instead of reinventing the story, the hack focuses on deeper battles, smarter AI, and a much wider range of viable team options.

The hack modernizes the game with updated mechanics like the Fairy type, physical/special split, and Gen 7-level movepools. At the same time, it raises difficulty through improved trainer teams, restricted battle mechanics, and an adjusted EXP curve.

The story remains largely the same as the original FireRed. However, while the narrative is unchanged, the gameplay experience is heavily altered. Trainers are stronger, team-building matters more, and progression requires more planning and strategy than in the base game.

Overall, it’s a “vanilla+ but harder” experience aimed at players who want a tougher, more strategic version of FireRed without losing its identity.

Key Features

  • Condensed Gen 3 Kanto Dex: The game features 151 carefully selected Pokémon from across Generation 3, with an additional ~50 Pokémon available in the Sevii Islands, allowing most of the Pokédex to be completed before the Elite Four.
  • Higher Difficulty Battles: Trainers have improved AI, better IVs, and completely reworked teams. Boss battles are significantly harder, requiring proper strategy and preparation.
  • Restricted Battle Rules: In-battle item usage is disabled (except held items), and the battle style is permanently set to “Set,” increasing difficulty and strategic depth.
  • Modern Battle Mechanics: Includes the Fairy type and the physical/special split, bringing the game closer to modern Pokémon standards.
  • Post-Game Mega Evolution Content: Mega Stones can be obtained by battling Gym Leaders in the Sevii Islands after the main story.
  • Updated Pokémon Stats & Evolutions: Base stats are adjusted to modern standards, and certain Pokémon receive Gen 4 evolution stat upgrades (e.g., Rhydon, Dusclops).
  • Modern Movesets & TM Compatibility: Movesets and TM learnsets are updated to Gen 7 standards, allowing for more flexible and competitive team building.
  • Ability Overhaul: Pokémon abilities are updated, including access to hidden abilities or entirely new ability combinations.
  • Graphical Improvements: Slightly updated environments, new overworld sprites, and enhanced soundtrack elements create a familiar yet refreshed Kanto.
  • Quality of Life Improvements: Includes decapitalized text, reusable TMs, deletable HMs, visible Hidden Power typing, colored stat indicators for natures, BW-style repel system, and Pokédex stat display.

Known Bugs & Issues

  • Using Fly with a poisoned Pokémon near fainting may freeze the game.
  • Some moves have animation glitches, particularly in Double Battles.
  • Certain wild encounters lack the “Lv” tag beside the level (reported in Tentacool and Mareep lines).
  • Bike price displayed incorrectly due to changed font.
  • Fossil Pokémon in Fuchsia City zoo may have incorrect overworld sprites.
  • Pokédex sorting by name, size, or other categories may display incorrectly.
