About This ROM Hack
Pokémon Bubble Blue is a Pokémon FireRed ROM hack built around the idea of giving the original game more items, TMs, and useful quality-of-life features while keeping the overall experience relatively vanilla. It is not designed as a difficulty hack, and the goal is to expand the standard FireRed adventure without turning it into a completely different game.
The hack includes the original 151 Pokémon, along with evolutions introduced in later generations, allowing Pokémon such as Tangrowth, Sylveon, and Magmortar to be obtained. The Fairy type, modernized learnsets, physical/special split, and various other gameplay updates bring some later-generation mechanics into the FireRed framework.
A major focus is making useful resources easier to obtain. The game contains 120 TMs scattered throughout the map, additional battle hold items, evolution items in Celadon Mart, and Ability Capsules and Ability Patches. Several changes also make a normal playthrough or Nuzlocke-style run more convenient, including early Running Shoes, a Shiny Charm available from the start, additional Poké Balls, and inexpensive supplies from the shady shop in Viridian City.
The hack also changes several Pokémon locations and adds optional ways to obtain the original 151. The Sevii Islands are not required to complete the 151-Pokédex collection, while Mew can be found at the Vermillion City Docks and Mewtwo becomes available after becoming Champion.
Version 1.0.1 includes several small fixes and event changes, including the TM Bullet Seed item color, event tickets, and the scientists' trainer type name. The update is compatible with older saves as long as the player has not yet given the Ruby to the relevant character for the ticket events.
Key Features
- Vanilla-Style FireRed Experience: Pokémon Bubble Blue expands the original FireRed formula while deliberately avoiding the design of a difficulty hack or a completely non-traditional Pokémon adventure.
- Physical/Special Split: The hack introduces the physical/special split, changing how moves are categorized and giving battles a more modern feel.
- Fairy Type: The Fairy type has been added to the FireRed-based game.
- Modern Learnsets: Pokémon receive more modern learnsets, giving the available Pokémon access to moves and strategies beyond the original FireRed movepools.
- 151 Pokémon + Later Evolutions: The original 151 Pokémon are catchable, with selected evolutions from later generations also available, including Tangrowth, Sylveon, and Magmortar.
- 120 TMs: A total of 120 TMs are scattered throughout the map. Ground-based TM items are colored yellow to make them easier to identify.
- Expanded Item Availability: The hack adds many useful battle-held items and makes evolution-related items much easier to obtain through Celadon Mart.
- Ability Capsules and Patches: Ability Capsules and Ability Patches are available in Celadon Mart.
- Early Running Shoes: Running Shoes can be obtained from the beginning of the game after speaking to Professor Oak.
- Shiny Charm from the Start: A Shiny Charm is available from the beginning, although the exact shiny odds are not specified.
- 20 Poké Balls at the Start: Players begin the adventure with 20 Poké Balls, making it easier to start building a team immediately.
- Six Exp. Shares After Brock: Six Exp. Shares become available after defeating Brock, providing a convenient way to train multiple Pokémon.
- Max Repels from Route 1 Shop: The Route 1 shop character provides a large supply of Max Repels, making longer exploration sessions more convenient.
- Shady Shop in Viridian City: A shady character in Viridian City sells Rare Candies, healing items, and mushrooms cheaply. This feature is intended to be useful for Nuzlocke runs and similar playthroughs.
- Move Relearner in Viridian City: A Move Relearner is available in Viridian City, making it easier to recover or adjust a Pokémon's moveset.
- Mew and Mewtwo Availability: Mew can be found behind the truck at the Vermillion City Docks, while Mewtwo becomes available after becoming Champion without requiring access to the Sevii Islands.
- Optional Sevii Islands for the 151 Pokédex: The Sevii Islands are optional when it comes to obtaining all 151 original Pokémon.
- Day and Night Cycle: A day/night cycle has been added, although it does not affect wild Pokémon encounters.
- Changed Old Rod Encounters: The Pokémon available through the Old Rod have been adjusted.
- Fossil Pokémon from Rock Smash: Rock Smash rocks in most caves can provide Kabuto, Omanyte, and Aerodactyl.
- Expanded Safari Zone: Players can bring their Pokémon into the Safari Zone, removing the traditional fleeing mechanic for Pokémon encounters there.
- Changed Pokémon Locations: Pokémon availability has been redistributed across Kanto, with locations such as Route 16, Safari Zone, Seafoam Islands, Route 21, Cinnabar Mansion, Route 11, Route 7, Victory Road, and the Vermillion City Docks receiving notable Pokémon placements.
- Quality-of-Life Improvements: The hack includes a variety of smaller QoL changes designed to make the standard FireRed experience more convenient without abandoning its original style.
