About This ROM Hack

Pokémon TCG Bad Luck is a humorous yet brutally difficult ROM hack of the Pokémon Trading Card Game for the Game Boy Color. Created as an April Fools' release, the hack was inspired by years of players requesting a "hard mode" for Pokémon TCG hacks. Instead of attempting to improve the game's AI, the developer took a completely different approach—making the player unbelievably unlucky.

The hack remains almost identical to the original Pokémon Trading Card Game in terms of cards, story, and progression. Rather than changing card balance or redesigning duels, it rewrites the game's random mechanics so that virtually every random outcome works against the player. Coin flips, status effects, turn order, and other chance-based mechanics are manipulated to create one of the most unfair Pokémon challenge hacks ever made.

Despite its comedic premise, Pokémon TCG Bad Luck is still fully playable and challenges players to overcome impossible odds while collecting the Legendary Pokémon Cards. An optional Hard Mode pushes the challenge even further by severely restricting the cards available to the player.

Key Features

  • Everything Works Against You: The core mechanic of the hack is simple—every random event is designed to produce the worst possible outcome for the player.
  • Player Coin Flips Always Land on Tails: Every coin flip performed by the player automatically results in tails.
  • Opponent Coin Flips Always Land on Heads: Opponents never suffer from bad luck, with all of their coin flips landing on heads.
  • Negative Random Effects: Random events and chance-based effects always favor the opponent whenever possible.
  • Always Go Second: Every duel begins with the player taking the second turn.
  • Sleep Becomes Much More Dangerous: Since beneficial coin flips are impossible for the player, Sleep and similar status effects become significantly harder to overcome.
  • Original Card Set Preserved: Aside from a few technical adjustments, the original card pool remains unchanged.
  • Enhanced Color Palette: The game uses Electro's 3 Palette Hack, giving cards, duelists, and other graphics a more colorful appearance.
  • Updated Player Sprite: Features a new player sprite along with a different default player name.
  • Promo Cards Available in Booster Packs: Promotional cards can now be obtained through normal booster packs instead of their original acquisition methods.
  • Reduced Pull Rates for Helpful Cards: Cards considered especially useful have intentionally lower pull rates to further increase the challenge.
  • Soft-Lock Prevention: Certain cards, including Geodude, have been internally modified to prevent gameplay soft-locks.
  • Modified Final Ronald Deck: Ronald's final deck has been strengthened to create an even tougher final battle.
  • Optional Hard Mode: An additional challenge mode limits the player to using Common cards only. Uncommon and Rare cards never appear for the player, making the game dramatically more difficult.

Known Bugs & Issues

No known technical bugs or gameplay issues have been documented by the developer.

The game's extreme difficulty is intentional and forms the core concept of the hack. Nearly every disadvantage experienced by the player—including guaranteed bad luck, unfavorable coin flips, and restricted rewards—is a deliberate gameplay mechanic rather than a bug.
