About This ROM Hack
Pokémon Scientist is a ROM hack of Pokémon Blue that completely reimagines the Generation I experience by placing you in the role of one of Professor Oak's trusted research assistants instead of a young Trainer beginning a Gym Challenge. While the familiar Kanto region remains, the game's narrative, gameplay balance, and overall design philosophy have been reworked to create a fresh take on the original adventure.
Rather than simply offering a difficulty hack, Pokémon Scientist explores what the original Pokémon games might have looked like if Game Freak had taken a different creative direction in 1996. Scientific research, field investigations, and the relationship between Professor Oak, Team Rocket, Silph Co., and Project Mewtwo become much more central to the overall experience.
The hack also introduces extensive gameplay changes. Competitive Generation I has long been known for the dominance of types like Psychic, Water, and Normal, so the developer redesigned the battle system with 22 changes to the type effectiveness chart, along with updated Pokémon typings, learnsets, statistics, bug fixes, and numerous quality-of-life improvements. The goal is to reward thoughtful strategy while making a wider variety of Pokémon viable throughout the game.
Although already feature-rich, Pokémon Scientist remains an ongoing project, with future updates planned based on community feedback, additional balance refinements, visual improvements, and new optional content.

Known Bugs & Issues
The developer has documented several issues and planned improvements:
v1.2 Changelog, July 22, 2026- Fixed the crash when Prof. Oak is beaten
- Fixed a bug where Mew becomes Ditto when caught after using Transform on a party Pokémon (Thanks to Reddit user MG2123 for pointing out these two bugs!)
- Remaining issues: I could not fix three additional glitches. The first two I could not replicate despite using the same emulator as Reddit user MG2123. First, a bug where apparently using the Phone in the Start Menu after talking to the Celadon Dep’t. Store Tradeback NPC causes surrounding NPCs to behave as Nurse Joy in the Pokémon Center. The second is a bug where having Mew in your party and visiting the Safari Zone will cause trainers’ Pokémon to flee, resulting in an instant win. The third I was able to replicate, but could not seem to fix. It is a bug where Kabuto appears as “AREA UNKNOWN” in the Pokédex, despite Kabuto appearing in Cerulean Cave B1F. A future update might fix these bugs if I can manage to solve them.
Since Pokémon Scientist is an ongoing project, additional balance changes, visual improvements, quality-of-life features, and optional content may be introduced in future releases based on player feedback.
