About This ROM Hack
Pokémon FireEmerald is an ambitious ROM hack built on the PokéEmerald-Expansion project that combines the complete adventures of Pokémon FireRed and Pokémon Emerald into a single, continuous campaign. Instead of treating Kanto and Hoenn as separate games, FireEmerald lets players complete Kanto before naturally continuing into Hoenn, carrying over their team, items, money, and Pokédex progress.
The project stays remarkably faithful to the original games. Rather than rewriting the story or introducing new characters, the developer only adjusts dialogue where necessary to keep both adventures connected. This creates a seamless experience that feels much like an official extended Pokémon journey instead of a traditional story rewrite.
Alongside combining two classic regions, FireEmerald benefits from the many modern improvements available through PokéEmerald-Expansion, including updated battle mechanics, newer Pokémon features, follower Pokémon, optional day and night functionality, and numerous quality-of-life improvements.
Version 0.5 is the first public release. While the developer considers the game fully playable from beginning to end, it remains a beta and additional refinements, bug fixes, and new features are planned for future updates.
Story Overview
Pokémon FireEmerald preserves the original stories of Pokémon FireRed and Pokémon Emerald, combining them into one continuous adventure with only minimal dialogue changes to maintain continuity.
Players begin their journey in Kanto, progressing through the original FireRed storyline. After becoming the Pokémon Champion, they immediately gain access to the Sevii Islands and eventually travel to Hoenn, where the Emerald storyline begins. Unlike an open-world ROM hack, progression follows a structured path: players cannot enter Hoenn before completing Kanto, nor can they return to Kanto until Hoenn has also been completed. Once both regional adventures are finished, free travel between Kanto and Hoenn becomes available.
The overall narrative remains faithful to the original games, with no new major characters or additional side stories added beyond what is necessary to connect the two regions.
Key Features
- Combined FireRed and Emerald Campaign: Experience both Kanto and Hoenn as one continuous adventure without switching games.
- Two Complete Regions: Complete the FireRed storyline before naturally continuing into Pokémon Emerald with all of your progress intact.
- Progress Carries Between Regions: Pokémon, items, money, Pokédex entries, and other player progress seamlessly transfer from Kanto into Hoenn.
- Structured Region Progression: Hoenn unlocks after defeating the Kanto Champion, while free travel between both regions becomes available after finishing both main stories.
- Earlier Sevii Islands Access: The Sevii Islands become available immediately after becoming Kanto Champion without requiring 60 Pokédex entries. Players may complete either the Sevii storyline or travel toward Hoenn first, with difficulty adjusting accordingly.
- Modern PokéEmerald-Expansion Features: Includes updated battle mechanics, modern move data, Fairy-type support, improved Pokémon data, follower Pokémon, optional day and night cycle, and many additional quality-of-life improvements.
- Follower Pokémon: Pokémon can accompany the player throughout their adventure.
- Optional Day and Night Cycle: Players can enjoy a time-based world without affecting those who prefer the classic experience.
- Hoenn Level Scaling: Hoenn has been rebalanced for post-game progression, with significantly higher trainer and wild Pokémon levels based on previous player progression.
- Improved Trainer Teams: Generic trainers use stronger, appropriately evolved Pokémon with improved movesets to better match the player's expected strength.
- Enhanced Gym Leaders: Hoenn Gym Leaders immediately use their third rematch teams with substantially increased levels.
- Expanded Rival Battles: The rival now has a much larger and more competitive team throughout Hoenn.
- Improved Economy: Trainers reward additional prize money, and stronger healing items and Poké Balls become available much earlier in Hoenn.
- No Version Exclusives: Version-exclusive Pokémon have been removed, allowing every available species to be obtained within a single playthrough.
- Integrated Event Tickets: Legendary event tickets are naturally distributed through NPCs instead of relying on duplicate key items or external events.
- Mega Evolution Support: Mega Stones become available later in the adventure, allowing access to Mega Evolution mechanics.
- Linking Cord Evolutions: Linking Cords become available during progression, simplifying Pokémon that traditionally require trading.
- Earlier Cerulean Cave Access: Cerulean Cave is available immediately after becoming Champion instead of requiring the Sevii Islands questline.
- Dynamic Mewtwo Level: Mewtwo appears at Level 60 if encountered before Hoenn, or Level 100 after completing Hoenn.
- Region-Specific Title Screens: The game loads either the FireRed or Emerald title screen depending on the region where the player last saved.
