About This ROM Hack

Pokémon Emerald But Bad is a unique difficulty enhancement ROM hack created by mortalnebula that combines challenging gameplay with an intentionally ridiculous visual style. Every Pokémon sprite has been completely redrawn by hand using HexManiacAdvance and MS Paint, resulting in simplified, humorous, and often internet-inspired designs that give the entire game a lighthearted personality.

Despite its comedic appearance, the gameplay is designed to be taken seriously. The hack draws inspiration from well-known challenge hacks such as Vintage White, Rigorous Red, and Sterling Silver, featuring extensive balance changes to Pokémon, moves, abilities, trainer teams, and encounters. The goal is to create a fair but demanding experience that rewards strategic play while remaining enjoyable for both Nuzlocke players and casual fans.

Before releasing this project, the developer experimented with the same concept in private FireRed and Ruby mini-hacks. Pokémon Emerald But Bad is the first full public release built around the idea.

Story Overview

Pokémon Emerald But Bad largely follows the original Pokémon Emerald storyline, with only a few additions made to enhance the adventure.

The main Hoenn story remains intact, but Team Aqua receives additional cutscenes and a special event that further highlights their role in the story. Alongside these additions, players can also encounter new optional boss battles, some of which are intentionally humorous to match the overall tone of the hack.

Key Features

  • Hand-Redrawn Pokémon Sprites: Every Pokémon has been completely redesigned with intentionally simple and humorous artwork created using MS Paint and HexManiacAdvance.
  • Difficulty Enhancement: Battles have been rebalanced to provide a challenging but fair experience inspired by ROM hacks such as Vintage White, Rigorous Red, and Sterling Silver.
  • Vanilla Generation III Battle System: The hack intentionally keeps original Generation III mechanics, meaning there is no Physical/Special Split or later-generation battle changes.
  • Pokémon Rebalancing: Numerous Pokémon have received updated stats, typings, abilities, learnsets, and balance adjustments to improve overall viability.
  • Move Reworks: Many existing moves have been modified through changes to power, PP, or effects to better balance both player and AI strategies.
  • New Moves Added: Additional attacks such as X-Scissor, Drill Run, Night Daze, Draco Meteor, Shadow Rush, and many more have been introduced.
  • Reworked Wild Encounters: Encounter tables have been extensively redesigned to provide greater Pokémon variety throughout Hoenn.
  • More Challenging Trainers: Trainers become progressively stronger throughout the adventure and utilize Gym Leader (Expert) AI, with additional AI improvements where appropriate.
  • Harder Gym Leaders and Team Aqua Battles: Major boss encounters have been significantly redesigned to provide more strategic battles.
  • Optional Battle Gauntlets: Several multi-battle challenges reward players with useful prizes after completion.
  • Trainer Back-to-Back Battles: Certain mid-game and late-game sections feature consecutive trainer battles that test resource management.
  • Dusclops Teleporters: Unlockable teleporters allow much faster travel around Hoenn after they become available.
  • Improved Poké Marts: Shops now sell a much wider selection of useful items, including Rare Candies, Berries, TMs, and other valuable resources.
  • Cheaper Game Corner TMs: Technical Machines purchased through the Game Corner require far fewer coins.
  • Item Rebalancing: Several held items and berries have been adjusted, including changes to Nature HP Berries and Shell Bell. Leppa Berry has been removed, encouraging the use of Max Elixirs instead.
  • EV System Removed: Effort Values and Vitamins have been removed to simplify progression and reduce grinding.
  • Evolution Changes: Several Pokémon evolve differently than in the original game.
  • No In-Game Trades: All NPC in-game trades have been removed.
  • Trainer Documentation Support: Comprehensive documentation identifies trainer teams, Pokémon changes, and battle information to help players plan difficult encounters.
  • Custom PC Wallpapers: New PC Box wallpaper themes have been added through the Etcetera theme collection.
  • New Heart Scale NPCs: Additional NPCs provide access to items such as Leftovers and Shell Bell.
  • Additional Team Aqua Story Events: Extra scenes expand Team Aqua's presence without replacing the original Hoenn narrative.
  • New Boss Battles: Several entirely new boss encounters have been added throughout the adventure, including some designed primarily for comedy.

Known Bugs & Issues

No major gameplay bugs are currently documented for Version 1.0.1.
