About This ROM Hack

PokeCave Almerald is a Dragon Cave-inspired Pokémon Emerald ROM hack that replaces the traditional Pokémon experience with a roster of 314 collectible dragons from the popular browser game Dragon Cave (Dragcave.net). Originally created as a joke between friends, the project evolved into a fully playable ROM hack that preserves the core gameplay of Pokémon Emerald while introducing an entirely new creature roster and numerous gameplay improvements.

Instead of redesigning Hoenn from the ground up, the hack intentionally stays close to vanilla Emerald, allowing players to experience the familiar adventure while collecting, training, evolving, and shiny hunting Dragon Cave dragons. Every Pokémon has been replaced with dragon counterparts, while battle mechanics have been modernized with features like the physical/special split, reusable TMs, updated typings, custom moves, and extensive quality-of-life improvements.

The hack is designed so that every dragon can be obtained in a single playthrough, eliminating the need for trading, cheats, or external tools. Alongside gameplay enhancements, numerous dialogue and overworld adjustments help integrate Dragon Cave's creatures naturally into the Hoenn setting.

Key Features

  • 314 Dragon Cave Dragons: Catch, evolve, train, shiny hunt, and battle using a roster of 314 dragons inspired by Dragon Cave.
  • Vanilla Emerald Adventure: Experience the original Hoenn storyline with Dragon Cave creatures replacing traditional Pokémon.
  • Physical/Special Split: Battle mechanics have been modernized with the physical/special split, making many dragons significantly more viable.
  • Updated Type System: Existing typings and effectiveness have been adjusted to better match Dragon Cave lore and improve overall battle balance.
  • Custom Move Names: Numerous attacks have been renamed to better fit dragons, replacing Pokémon-specific terminology with more thematic names.
  • New and Expanded Moves: Includes backported moves from later Pokémon generations along with entirely original attacks created specifically for the hack.
  • Custom Typings: Dragons feature revised elemental typings designed around Dragon Cave's world and lore.
  • Retyped Gyms: Several Gym Leaders and their teams have been updated to reflect the new type system.
  • Dialogue and Overworld Improvements: NPC dialogue and overworld references have been rewritten so the world naturally references dragons instead of Pokémon.
  • National Pokédex Available Immediately: The National Dex is unlocked from the beginning of the game alongside the standard Pokédex.
  • Post-Game Event Items: Event-exclusive items become available after completing the main game through an NPC in the Battle Frontier.
  • Reusable TMs: Technical Machines can be used indefinitely, allowing greater team customization without permanent resource management.
  • Complete Single-Player Collection: Every dragon, including unchosen starters, can be legitimately obtained during one playthrough.
  • Increased Shiny Odds: Shiny rates have been increased to 1 in 2,048, making shiny hunting considerably more accessible.
  • Extensive Quality of Life Improvements: Numerous gameplay refinements reduce unnecessary grinding while keeping the classic Emerald experience intact.

Known Bugs & Issues

The developer has documented several known quirks and unresolved issues.

Intended Quirks

  • The Regional Dex skips entries and does not display every dragon or evolution correctly. The National Dex functions properly.
  • Some dragons with canonical sexual dimorphism do not display those visual differences.
  • Several Poké Dolls still use original Pokémon appearances.
  • Randomized playthroughs should limit the Pokédex to 314 entries to avoid encountering original Pokémon.
  • Pokédex footprints and Pokémon size information remain unchanged.
  • The Braille puzzle is unchanged and must still be solved similarly to the original game.

Known Bugs

  • In rare cases, the game may crash when a dragon levels up. Saving frequently is recommended.
  • Battle Frontier Brains still use original Pokémon instead of Dragon Cave dragons.
