About This ROM Hack

Pokémon Re:Soul Silver is the third entry in the developer's Re: series, following Re:Alpha Sapphire and Re:White. Rather than transforming SoulSilver into an extreme difficulty hack, it focuses on addressing many of the balance issues present in the original game while preserving its classic atmosphere and progression.

The developer's goal was to create a version of SoulSilver that feels more rewarding from beginning to end. The uneven level curve, underwhelming trainer battles, limited Pokémon variety, and weak encounter distribution have all been carefully redesigned to provide a smoother challenge. Despite these improvements, the hack remains welcoming to players who are trying a difficulty-enhanced ROM hack for the first time.

One of the biggest additions is Open-World Kanto, allowing players to visit Kanto as early as reaching Goldenrod City. Alongside a greatly expanded Pokédex, numerous Pokémon rebalances, quality-of-life improvements, and revised evolution methods, Re:Soul Silver offers a fresh way to experience one of the most beloved Nintendo DS Pokémon games while remaining faithful to its original identity.

Key Features

  • Open-World Kanto: After arriving in Goldenrod City, players can immediately travel to Saffron City and freely explore much of the Kanto region long before the original post-game.
  • Expanded Pokédex: Every one of the original 493 Generation IV Pokémon can be obtained using a single save file without requiring external trading.
  • Powerful Optional Bosses: Exploring early Kanto introduces challenging opponents including Professor Oak, Steven Stone, Collector Chimey, and other powerful trainers guarding valuable rewards.
  • Regional Variant Starters: The traditional Johto starters have been replaced by Treecko, Chimchar, and Squirtle, each receiving unique regional forms inspired by different periods of Japanese history.
  • Rebalanced Trainer Battles: Nearly every trainer in Johto and Kanto has been redesigned with improved teams, higher-quality Pokémon, and a much smoother difficulty progression.
  • Improved Level Curve: Trainer levels progress more naturally throughout the game, eliminating many of SoulSilver's infamous pacing issues and reducing the drastic Elite Four difficulty spike.
  • Enhanced Team Rocket Battles: Team Rocket encounters have been expanded into more strategic battles instead of serving as simple story obstacles.
  • Pokémon Rebalancing: Numerous Pokémon receive updated typings, abilities, stats, and roles to improve overall viability. Examples include Typhlosion becoming Fire/Electric with Adaptability and Discharge, and Zangoose becoming Normal/Fighting with Scrappy.
  • Move Rebalancing: Many attacks have been improved to better suit their users. Examples include Fly becoming a reliable high-powered move, Shadow Claw receiving increased power, and Poison Sting becoming significantly stronger.
  • Updated Learnsets: Pokémon receive revised movesets that better complement their redesigned stats and abilities.
  • New Gift Pokémon: Several gift Pokémon have been replaced or expanded, including Primo's Johto starter Eggs and stronger replacements for Kenya and Shuckie.
  • Simplified Evolution Methods: Trade evolutions have been removed, and evolution requirements have been redesigned so every Pokémon can fully evolve before the eighth Gym.
  • Improved Item Evolutions: Pokémon requiring held evolution items now have a 50% chance of holding their evolution item in the wild, allowing easier progression.
  • Legendary Hunt: After obtaining the National Dex, players can hunt every Legendary and Mythical Pokémon through an expanded event system using the Hoenn and Sinnoh Sound features.
  • Hidden Superboss: An additional secret post-game boss becomes available after defeating Red, providing one of the game's toughest optional battles.
  • Extensive Quality of Life Improvements: Includes HM improvements, revised trade evolutions, following Pokémon support, exploration enhancements, and numerous gameplay refinements.
