About This ROM Hack
Rogue Rescue Team is a ROM hack built from the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team disassembly project. Developed with the goal of transforming Red Rescue Team into a true roguelike experience, the hack focuses heavily on procedural gameplay, strategic decision-making, replayability, and challenge rather than story expansion.
Unlike a pure randomizer, Rogue Rescue Team attempts to preserve thematic consistency within dungeons while still introducing extensive randomization. Dungeon layouts, enemy encounters, traps, weather conditions, item pools, and progression are all influenced by a chosen seed value, allowing players to replay identical runs or share challenges with others.
The hack significantly rebalances Pokémon, items, moves, recruiting mechanics, bosses, and dungeon generation systems. Every Pokémon is designed to be usable from Level 1, while difficulty settings allow players to tailor the experience from accessible to extremely punishing.
This project is primarily designed as a gameplay-focused dungeon crawler rather than a story-focused Pokémon Mystery Dungeon experience.
Key Features
- Seeded Roguelike Structure: Choose a numeric seed during the personality quiz to generate a unique but reproducible adventure. Players can share seeds and compete through identical dungeon runs.
- 10-Dungeon Campaign: Progress through ten themed dungeons that gradually increase in difficulty, revealing only the next challenge ahead.
- Three Difficulty Modes: Normal, Hard, and Nightmare settings affect recruitment rates, boss power, item restrictions, trap frequency, visibility, weather effects, and more.
- NatDex and Classic Modes: Choose between an expanded Pokédex including later-generation Pokémon or a roster focused on the original Rescue Team era.
- Play as Any Pokémon: Select any playable Pokémon and partner combination from the start, including legendary Pokémon.
- Starter Item Selection: Begin each run by choosing one item from five randomized starting options.
- All Friend Areas Unlocked: Every Friend Area is available immediately.
- Difficulty-Based Recruitment System: Recruitment rates scale according to the chosen difficulty level rather than being tied to Pokémon levels.
- Optional No-Recruit Challenge Mode: Disable recruiting entirely for additional challenge.
- Difficulty-Scaled Recruit Limits: Maximum recruitable party sizes change depending on difficulty settings.
- Enhanced Boss Battles: Bosses feature custom movesets, HP scaling, weather effects, and improved balancing.
- Boss Loot Drops: Defeating bosses rewards players with loot that improves throughout the run.
- Expanded Dungeon Generation: Includes additional room types, maze structures, island layouts, checker layouts, pools, dividers, and greater floor variety.
- Super Trap Rooms: Special heavily trapped floors can be identified through NPC hints.
- Interactive Hub NPCs: NPCs between dungeons provide recruitment services, hints, and other useful functions.
- Move Removal NPC: Allows unwanted moves to be removed from Pokémon.
- Difficulty-Based Visibility: Vision range changes depending on selected difficulty.
- Difficulty-Based Item Limits: Dungeon entry item limits become stricter on higher difficulties.
- Difficulty-Based Sticky Items: Sticky item frequency increases with difficulty.
- Kecleon Shop Variations: Shops can occasionally appear without a shopkeeper, forcing players to decide whether theft is worth the risk.
- Weather Integration: Weather naturally appears in suitable dungeons and is incorporated into boss battles.
- Level 1 Pokémon Rebalance: Every Pokémon is balanced to remain viable from the start of a run.
- Improved Starting Movesets: All Pokémon begin with at least two offensive attacks, including Ditto.
- Regular Attack Rework: Uses the stronger offensive stat automatically.
- Move Balance Changes: Numerous moves such as Silver Wind, Heat Wave, Powder Snow, Agility, Attract, Return, Frustration, and Spore have been redesigned for improved balance.
- HM Rework: HMs function like regular TMs and can be discovered in dungeons.
- Increased Experience Gain: Experience gain is increased by approximately 20% to reduce grinding.
- Experience Curve Adjustments: Certain Pokémon with unusually slow growth rates receive bonus experience.
- Weighted Encounter System: Early dungeon floors are more likely to contain weaker Pokémon.
- Shiny Pokémon System: Rare shiny Pokémon can appear and are guaranteed recruits when encountered.
- Expanded Shiny Visuals: Shiny coloration has been reworked to support body-part color modifications.
- Additional Playable Pokémon: Adds Bonsly, Mime Jr., Riolu, Lucario, Weavile, Joltik, and Galvantula.
- Playable Special Pokémon: Munchlax and the Decoy glitch Pokémon are fully playable with custom movesets.
