About This ROM Hack

Pokémon Masters Red is a unique arcade-style ROM hack of the original Pokémon Red that strips away the traditional RPG progression in favor of a fast-paced battle challenge. Instead of exploring Kanto, catching Pokémon, and grinding levels, the entire experience revolves around building teams and defeating increasingly difficult opponents.

From the very beginning, players assemble their party from a completely redesigned Pokémon roster before taking on sixteen of Kanto's strongest trainers in order of increasing difficulty. Every battle is designed to be meaningful, with no unnecessary grinding between fights. After each victory, your entire team is automatically healed, allowing you to immediately prepare for the next challenge.

The hack emphasizes competitive gameplay, featuring smarter AI, updated Pokémon stats, improved movesets, new type combinations, and numerous battle balance adjustments. Players can freely swap teams between battles through the start menu, encouraging experimentation with different strategies rather than committing to a single party throughout the game.

To accommodate different skill levels, three game modes are included, giving both casual players and experienced battlers an appropriate level of challenge.

Key Features

  • Arcade-Style Gameplay: Removes traditional exploration and grinding, focusing entirely on strategic trainer battles.
  • Boss Rush Progression: Battle sixteen of Kanto's strongest trainers in a carefully designed progression from the easiest encounter to the final Champion battle.
  • Instant Team Building: Build your team from a completely redesigned Pokémon roster without needing to catch or train Pokémon.
  • Team Switching Anytime: Freely swap Pokémon teams between battles directly through the Start Menu, making experimentation quick and convenient.
  • Automatic Team Recovery: Every Pokémon is fully healed before each new battle, eliminating downtime between matches.
  • Three Difficulty Modes: Multiple game modes allow players to tailor the experience to their preferred level of challenge.
  • Improved Trainer AI: Opponents make smarter decisions, creating more tactical and competitive battles.
  • No Battle Items: Items cannot be used during battles, placing greater emphasis on strategy and team composition.
  • Expanded Type Diversity: Several Pokémon receive new typings to improve overall team variety. Examples include Gyarados, Charizard, and Seadra becoming Water/Dragon or Fire/Dragon, while Ninetales and Marowak gain Ghost secondary typings.
  • Comprehensive Pokémon Rebalancing: Many Pokémon have updated base stats to narrow the gap between weaker and stronger species, allowing more Pokémon to remain viable throughout the challenge.
  • Moveset Improvements: Numerous Pokémon receive updated learnsets to better support competitive play.
  • Move Balance Adjustments: Many attacks have had their power and accuracy adjusted to improve overall type balance.
  • Critical Hit Rework: Critical hits now function as a flat 10% chance for every Pokémon rather than relying on the original Generation I mechanics.
  • Freeze Status Rebalanced: Frozen Pokémon can now thaw naturally within three turns instead of potentially remaining frozen indefinitely.
  • Ghost-Type Buff: Ghost-type attacks are now properly super effective against Psychic-types.
  • Amnesia Balance Change: Amnesia's Special stat multiplier has been reduced, preventing Psychic-types from dominating battles as heavily as they did in the original game.
  • Updated Graphics: Pokémon sprites have been replaced with improved visuals based on the Spaceworld '97 beta sprite designs, alongside updated NPC and boss sprites.
