About This ROM Hack

Pokémon Chrome Gold is a traditional enhancement hack of Pokémon HeartGold that focuses on improving accessibility without changing what made the original game memorable. Instead of redesigning Johto with harder battles, new storylines, or heavy balancing, the goal is to let players experience the original HeartGold adventure with far fewer restrictions on Pokémon availability.

The project was created using hg-engine, an extensive community-developed toolkit led by BluRosie. The developer openly states that many of the hack's quality-of-life improvements, scripting systems, newer generation Pokémon support, and engine features come from the hg-engine community rather than being original creations. Their own work primarily involved game design decisions, encounter table edits, evolution changes, Pokémon placement, and a custom Celebi event.

Unlike many modern HGSS ROM hacks that dramatically increase difficulty or overhaul mechanics, Chrome Gold intentionally stays close to the original experience. Trainer battles, game progression, story events, and overall difficulty remain virtually untouched, making it ideal for players who simply want a more complete version of HeartGold.

Key Features

  • Complete Johto Pokédex Access: Every Johto version-exclusive Pokémon from SoulSilver is now obtainable in a single playthrough, including species like Skarmory and Ledyba.
  • Earlier Pokémon Availability: Many Pokémon that originally appeared only after the main story have been moved into the regular adventure, allowing Pokémon such as Slugma and Sneasel to be used much earlier.
  • Earlier Access to Late-Game Pokémon: Pokémon that normally appeared extremely late in HeartGold have been redistributed throughout Johto, including examples like Phanpy.
  • Cross-Generation Evolutions: Pokémon that naturally exist in Johto can now evolve into their newer forms, allowing access to evolutions such as Electivire, Honchkrow, Farigiraf, Ursaluna, and Dudunsparce.
  • Catchable Baby Pokémon: Baby Pokémon have been added to wild encounter tables, usually replacing or accompanying their evolved relatives. This also includes later-generation baby Pokémon like Bonsly and Azurill.
  • Reusable TMs: Technical Machines no longer disappear after use, making team building much more convenient.
  • Fairy Type Support: The Fairy type has been fully implemented, bringing battle mechanics closer to modern Pokémon games.
  • Trade Evolutions Removed: Every Pokémon that originally required trading can now evolve through alternative in-game methods.
  • Custom Celebi Event: A unique post-game scripted event allows players to legitimately catch Celebi in Kanto.
  • Completely Vanilla Trainer Battles: No trainer teams, AI, or battle difficulty have been modified.
  • Original Difficulty Preserved: Wild Pokémon levels, progression, and overall challenge remain faithful to the original HeartGold experience.
  • No Stat or Competitive System Editing: IVs, EVs, Natures, Abilities, and similar mechanics remain unchanged, keeping the game balanced around the original design.
  • Designed for Casual Vanilla Playthroughs: The overall philosophy is to provide a cleaner, more complete version of HeartGold without turning it into a difficulty hack.
