About This ROM Hack

Pokémon RBY Nova is a large-scale enhancement hack of the original Pokémon Red & Blue that aims to modernize Generation 1 without completely abandoning its classic identity. Instead of turning Gen 1 into an entirely different game, the project focuses on carefully integrating modern Pokémon concepts while preserving the charm, pacing, and atmosphere that made the originals memorable.

The hack expands the original Pokédex into a roster of 190 Pokémon, including Generation 1-related evolutions, baby Pokémon, and regional or variant-style replacements for certain original monsters. The overall experience is designed to feel like a “what if Gen 1 kept evolving naturally?” scenario rather than a full remake.

One of the project’s most notable features is the inclusion of two gameplay versions. The Classic version preserves the original move pools for players wanting a more authentic retro experience, while the Modern version introduces over 70 additional moves to create more strategic variety and modern battle depth.

Beyond the expanded roster, RBY Nova significantly improves the original gameplay structure through extensive rebalancing, streamlined progression, upgraded trainer AI, quality-of-life systems, and additional post-game content. Despite all of these upgrades, the game still intentionally maintains a recognizable Generation 1 feel.

The result is a polished and thoughtfully designed Gen 1 experience that feels modernized without losing the simplicity and personality of classic Pokémon Red & Blue.
