About This ROM Hack

Pokémon Green (UE) International is a highly focused preservation and restoration-style ROM hack that attempts to answer a long-standing “what if?” question within Pokémon history:

What if Pokémon Green had officially released internationally alongside Red and Blue?

Rather than modernizing Gen 1 with quality-of-life improvements or gameplay overhauls, this project is built around historical authenticity and careful reconstruction. The creator combines elements from the original Japanese releases of Pokémon Green and Japanese Blue, restoring content, visuals, and mechanics that were either changed or abandoned before the international versions of Red & Blue launched.

The project intentionally keeps the experience close to original 1998-era Pokémon design philosophy. There are no major gameplay redesigns, modern systems, or balance overhauls. Instead, the emphasis is on recreating a believable “international Pokémon Green” using authentic-era assets and design choices.

This includes restoring Japanese Green battle sprites, Green’s unique Super Game Boy palette, Green’s overworld tileset, Blue’s encounter tables, Blue’s in-game trades, and original Pokédex descriptions adapted from FireRed’s preserved Red/Green text.

The result feels less like a traditional ROM hack and more like a historical alternate-version reconstruction project, preserving the quirks and atmosphere of early Generation 1 Pokémon.

Key Features

  • Authentic International Pokémon Green Concept: Reimagines what an official western release of Pokémon Green could have looked like in the late 1990s.
  • Japanese Pokémon Green Visual Restoration: Restores Green’s original battle sprites, overworld tilesets, and graphical identity.
  • Japanese Blue Gameplay Integration: Includes encounter tables, Game Corner prizes, and in-game trades from Japanese Blue.
  • Localized Default Character Names: Incorporates localized equivalents of original Japanese default names, including references connected to FireRed/LeafGreen and the anime.
  • Restored Pokédex Entries: Uses Pokédex descriptions sourced from FireRed, which themselves preserved original Red/Green text concepts.
  • Pokémon Green Super Game Boy Palette: Restores Green’s unique color palette and Super Game Boy presentation.
  • Green Title Screen & Rotating Pokémon: Recreates Green’s original title presentation style.
  • Classic Gen 1 Gameplay Preserved: No modern quality-of-life systems or major gameplay redesigns were added intentionally.
  • Localized In-Game Trade Nicknames: All Japanese trade Pokémon names were carefully adapted into fitting English equivalents without meme references.
  • Original Cerulean Cave Layout: Uses the Red/Green version of Cerulean Cave later reused in FireRed/LeafGreen.
  • Haunter Trade Evolution Update: Haunter now evolves into Gengar during the in-game trade event.
  • Optional Patch Collection: Includes optional GitHub patches for players wanting customization without altering the core philosophy of the project.

Known Bugs & Issues

  • No major bugs are specifically documented. However, the creator notes that because Pokémon sprites were reorganized internally, certain GameShark codes may require adjustment or verification before use.
  • The project intentionally preserves many original Generation 1 quirks and limitations.
