About This ROM Hack

Pokémon Yellow: Fort Knox Edition isn't here to add content. No new Pokémon, no new regions, no difficulty tweaks. What it does is fix things — a lot of things.

The whole project is built around a security engineering mindset, treating Pokémon Yellow like a system that needs hardening. Save corruption, RNG manipulation, memory overflow exploits, unintended glitches that the speedrunning community has spent years documenting and abusing — all of it gets addressed. The goal is a version of Yellow that behaves the way it was probably supposed to, just without decades of discovered exploits sitting on top of it.

The inspiration comes directly from Gen 1 through 3 speedrunning knowledge and community research. If you've ever watched a Yellow speedrun and thought about how many of those tricks only work because of deeply buried oversights in the original code, this hack is essentially the answer to that.

The result is a cleaner, more stable, more consistent Yellow. Not a reimagining — just the game as it might have looked if it had been built with modern standards for fairness and reliability in mind.

Key Features

  • Save Integrity Protection: Adds a system flag that detects unsafe shutdowns during saving and prevents corrupted save files from loading, reducing save corruption risk.
  • Improved Save Checksum Validation: Strengthens detection of save data corruption caused by battery failure or unexpected interruptions.
  • Trainer Fly Fix: Removes the ability to perform the Trainer Fly exploit, a well-known Gen 1 sequence break.
  • Badge Boost System Fix: Corrects badge boost behavior so stat modifiers apply properly and cannot be abused through move interactions or X item stacking.
  • RNG System Overhaul: Replaces the original RNG with a statistically robust PRNG and saves RNG seed state, preventing manipulation through resets or controlled input sequences.
  • Critical Hit and Accuracy Corrections: Fixes inconsistencies where move accuracy and critical hit multipliers behaved incorrectly compared to intended design.
  • Buffer Overflow Prevention (Pikawalk Fix): Prevents memory corruption caused by Pikachu overworld behavior glitches (notably sleep/interaction edge cases).
  • Surge Gym Puzzle Fix: Ensures Lt. Surge’s switch puzzle behaves consistently with intended design, eliminating unreliable or inconsistent switch layouts.
  • Battle System Edge Case Fixes: Fixes multiple lesser-known bugs including animation severity miscalculations, option input glitches, and stat state inconsistencies.
  • Thrashing/Rage Accuracy Fix: Prevents accuracy degradation stacking incorrectly during multi-turn move conditions.
  • Systemic Glitch Cleanup: A wide range of smaller Gen 1 exploits and undefined behaviors are patched, especially those relevant to speedrunning and memory manipulation.

Known Bugs & Issues

  • Some non-speedrun-critical glitches are intentionally left unpatched
  • Substitute-related edge case behavior is known but still under investigation
  • Due to the complexity of Gen 1 engine behavior, some rare edge-case interactions may still exist
  • As this is a systems-focused hack, no gameplay content bugs are heavily documented

Q: Does it change the story or gameplay content?
A: No, the story and core gameplay remain the same. Only internal mechanics are modified.

Q: Can you still do Gen 1 glitches in this version?
A: Most major exploits like Trainer Fly and save corruption methods have been patched out.

Q: Is this a difficulty hack?
A: No, it is not designed to be harder. It is designed to be more stable and consistent.

Q: Why was the RNG changed?
A: To prevent manipulation strategies used in speedrunning and to eliminate predictable RNG cycles.

Q: Does this affect casual playthroughs?
A: Yes, but mostly in positive ways—fewer crashes, fewer glitches, and more consistent behavior.

Q: Who is this hack for?
A: It is ideal for players who want a clean, stable version of Gen 1 Pokémon without glitches or exploit-based shortcuts, especially those interested in speedrun integrity or technical game behavior.

Q: Are all bugs fixed?
A: No. Only major or speedrun-relevant issues are prioritized; some minor or non-critical glitches remain.
