About This ROM Hack
Pokémon Spa is a lighthearted and unconventional ROM hack that shifts the focus away from battles and progression, instead offering a relaxed, puzzle-driven experience.
The core gameplay revolves around understanding Pokémon needs and interacting with them in the correct ways using the tools provided. Rather than being told exactly what to do, players are encouraged to experiment and figure things out on their own, making it more of a trial-and-error puzzle experience.
Originally intended as a submission for a ROM hacking competition (TARC2), the project was paused and later released in its intended state. Because of this, the hack feels more like a creative concept or prototype than a fully expanded game—but that’s part of its charm.
Story Overview
Pokémon Spa does not feature a traditional story in the same sense as mainline Pokémon games.
Instead, the game presents a simple premise: you are placed in a spa-like environment where Pokémon come to be cared for and satisfied. Your role is to interact with them using the available mechanics and figure out what makes each Pokémon happy.
There are no Gym Leaders, villains, or overarching narrative arcs. The experience is intentionally minimal and focused purely on gameplay, experimentation, and lighthearted interaction.
Key Features
- Puzzle-Based Gameplay: Instead of battling, players solve interaction-based puzzles by figuring out how to satisfy each Pokémon using limited tools.
- Non-Battling Experience: Completely removes traditional Pokémon combat, offering a unique gameplay loop centered on care and interaction.
- Inspired by Pokémon Amie: Takes inspiration from Pokémon Amie-style mechanics, focusing on bonding and understanding Pokémon behavior.

- New Interaction Mechanics: Introduces custom mechanics tailored to the spa concept, encouraging experimentation and discovery.
- Lighthearted Design: Emphasizes a relaxing and casual tone rather than challenge or competition.
- Minigame Structure: Plays more like a standalone minigame than a full RPG, with focused and contained gameplay.
