About This ROM Hack

Pokémon Version Violette is a Pokémon Red enhancement ROM hack designed to restore and expand content that was cut or never released in Western versions of the original game.

Built on the Shin Pokered framework, the hack integrates a variety of unused assets, early development ideas, and design concepts drawn from historical Pokémon materials such as the famous **Space World 1997 demo that previewed early ideas for Generation II.

In addition to restoring unused content, the hack introduces many gameplay improvements inspired by later Pokémon generations. These include improved battle mechanics, updated type systems, quality-of-life features, and optional challenge modes.

The project also incorporates several long-standing Pokémon playground rumors and myths, turning them into actual discoverable features in the game. With expanded post-game content, improved AI, and modernized systems, Pokémon Version Violette aims to create a definitive version of the original Kanto adventure.

Key Features

  • Restored Prototype Content: Includes ideas and assets inspired by early Pokémon prototypes shown during the Space World 1997.
  • Complete Pokédex Availability: A total of 166 Pokémon can be captured without trading or cheats.
  • Generation II Mechanics Integration: Move sets, type interactions, and battle systems are partially redesigned based on Generation II gameplay.
  • Expanded Post-Game Content: New activities and areas become available after defeating the Elite Four.
  • Classic Rumors Implemented: Several well-known playground myths from the early Pokémon era have been added to the game as real events.
  • Improved Trainer AI and Progression: Enemy trainers feature better strategies and the overall progression has been rebalanced.
  • Modern Quality-of-Life Features: Includes sprinting, a second bag system, temporary HM usage, remote PC box switching, and smoother performance.
  • Optional Challenge Modes: Players can enable gameplay modifiers such as Nuzlocke rules, level caps, or randomizer mode.
  • Performance Improvements: The game can run at higher frame rates such as 60 FPS, making gameplay smoother than the original Game Boy release.
