About This ROM Hack

The main idea behind the hack is simple but chaotic: it greatly expands the Pokémon type system. Instead of the usual 18 types in modern Pokémon games, Too Many Types adds dozens of new types, bringing the total to 62.

The hack goes beyond just adding types. It redesigns moves, Pokémon typings, and battle mechanics to fit this expanded system. Many Pokémon now have completely new type combinations, and some even have three types at once. Trainers use these unusual typings throughout the game, leading to battles that feel unpredictable and strategic.

Even with these major mechanical changes, the core structure of Pokémon Emerald stays recognizable. Players still explore the Hoenn region, challenge gym leaders, and aim to defeat the Elite Four. However, gym leaders now specialize in entirely new custom types, and most trainers have randomized teams to keep the experience interesting.

Along with new moves, improvements for player convenience, and modern Pokémon mechanics, Pokémon: Too Many Types offers a chaotic but highly entertaining twist on the traditional Pokémon formula.

Story Overview

Pokémon: Too Many Types is set in the Hoenn region and mostly follows the flow of Pokémon Emerald. While the main story of Emerald stays the same, the greatly expanded type system offers a wholly different gameplay experience.

Key Features

  • Expanded Type System: 62 Total Pokémon Types. The hack adds 44 new types to the game, increasing the total number of Pokémon types from 18 to 62.
  • Triple-Type Pokémon: Expanded Typing Mechanics. Pokémon can now have up to three types simultaneously, creating complex type matchups.
  • Massive Move Expansion: 118 Brand-New Moves. Over one hundred original moves were created to support the expanded type system.
  • Move Type Reworks: Existing Moves Updated. The types of approximately 180 existing moves have been changed to match the new type ecosystem.
  • Regional Pokédex: 295 Pokémon with New Typings. The game includes a curated regional Pokédex where every Pokémon has been reassigned new or altered types.
  • Randomized Trainer Battles: Dynamic Encounters. All non-gym and non-rival trainers use randomized teams balanced around comparable strength levels.
  • Gym Leader Type Overhaul: Completely New Specializations. Gym leaders and Elite Four members specialize in newly introduced types instead of traditional ones.
  • Special Event Pokémon: New Story Encounters. Additional cutscenes allow players to obtain unique Pokémon, including Generation 8 fossil Pokémon.
  • Modern Battle Mechanics: Updated Pokémon Stats. Pokémon use modern generation stats and mechanics rather than their original Emerald values.

Quality of Life Improvements

  • Infinite Rare Candy: Unlimited Leveling Tool. A key item grants access to infinite Rare Candies for fast training.
  • Escape Rope Key Item: Unlimited Dungeon Escape. Escape Rope functionality is available as a reusable key item.
  • Enemy Team Preview: Tactical Battle Information. Pressing the L button during battle allows players to view the opponent’s full team.
  • Fast Battle Escape: Double-Tap B to Run. Players can double-press B to quickly attempt to escape from wild battles.
  • Move Relearner Anywhere: Party Screen Feature. Pokémon can relearn moves directly from the party menu without visiting a move tutor.
  • Infinite TMs: Reusable Technical Machines. TMs can be used repeatedly rather than being consumed.
  • Ability Items in Shops: Easier Ability Changes. Ability Capsules and Ability Patches can be purchased in most Poké Marts.
  • HM Item System: HM Moves Without Party Slots. Special items replace traditional HM usage so players do not need HM-only Pokémon.
  • Reworked Evolutions: Trade Evolutions Simplified. Trade evolutions now work using a Link Cable item or simply by holding the required item.
  • Expanded Evolution Shops: Easier Evolution Access. All evolution stones can be purchased in Lavaridge Town, and all evolution items are available in Lilycove Department Store.

Special Type Interactions

Many of the newly added types include unique mechanics that alter battle behavior.

  • Dream Type: Immune to sleep status conditions.
  • Dance Type: Cannot be paralyzed.
  • Fluffy Type: Cannot be frozen.
  • Silly Type: Immune to confusion.
  • Bad Type: Cannot be burned.
  • Gamer Type: Immune to sandstorm damage.
  • Boring Type: Raises Special Defense on turns where the Pokémon does not attack.
  • Pikachu Type: Only Pokémon with this type can use certain Pikachu-themed moves.
  • Reverse Type: Reverses type effectiveness against the Pokémon.
  • Type Type: Doubles the effectiveness modifiers of type interactions.

Obtaining Special Pokémon

Several Pokémon can be obtained through special methods across the region:

  • Anorith: Trade with a trainer in Rustboro City.
  • Lileep: Trade with a trainer in Fortree City.
  • Mew: Found under the truck near the Slateport Museum after obtaining Thunderbolt.
  • Latios: Roams the region after the player obtains Surf. Unlike normal roaming Pokémon, it will not flee if the player uses Fly.
  • Generation 8 Fossil Pokémon: Found in Mirage Tower, with additional fossils appearing in the Desert Underpass.
  • Galarian Ponyta: Received as an egg in Lavaridge Town.
  • Munchlax: Trade with a trainer in Pacifidlog Town.

Known Bugs & Issues

  • The game works best on the mGBA emulator. Some emulators may experience crashes.
  • Due to the extremely large type system, some matchups may behave unexpectedly.
  • With dozens of new types and moves, some combinations may be stronger or weaker than intended.
