About This ROM Hack
Pokémon Re:Emerald is a ROM hack that enhances Pokémon Emerald while maintaining its original identity. The project's goal is straightforward: what if Game Freak updated Emerald today, adding modern features without changing the gameplay? This hack brings in many quality-of-life improvements inspired by newer Pokémon games, but it sticks to the mechanics and design style of Generation III. The developer purposely avoids including elements from Generation IV and later, like the physical/special split or new Pokémon, to keep the game feeling like a true Emerald experience.
Using the pokeemerald-expansion decomp project, Re:Emerald introduces numerous gameplay tweaks, better systems, expanded post-game content, and changes for easier access, all while keeping the original story and visuals mostly the same.
Story Overview
The main story of Pokémon Re:Emerald remains faithful to the original Pokémon Emerald storyline. However, additional post-game improvements, new legendary encounters, enhanced trainer rematches, and new battle challenges aim to extend the life of the adventure beyond the main storyline.
Key Features
- All 386 Pokémon Obtainable: The final version aims to make every Pokémon from Generations I–III obtainable in a single save file, including custom events or locations for missing Legendary Pokémon.
- Enhanced Emerald Features: Core Emerald mechanics such as Trainer Hill, Contests, Secret Bases, and the Battle Frontier remain intact but receive improvements to rewards, balance, and accessibility.
- Massive Quality-of-Life Improvements: Features like reusable TMs, Auto Run, permanent obstacle clearing (Cut trees, Strength puzzles, etc.), instant text options, and faster menus significantly streamline the gameplay experience.
- Improved Battle Systems: Modernized mechanics include Gen V+ style EV application after battles, ability activation popups, Level 100 EV gains, and multi-target move previews in double battles.
- Expanded Post-Game Content: New legendary encounters, updated Elite Four teams, additional rival battles, and a new swarm mechanic that gradually introduces more Pokémon to the wild.
- Improved Trainer Rematches: Trainer rematches are easier to trigger and their teams improve as the story progresses, similar to the system used in ORAS.
- Breeding Improvements: Breeding mechanics now support Poké Ball inheritance, increased shiny odds when breeding shiny parents, and updated Everstone nature inheritance.
- Overworld Ability Effects: Certain abilities influence encounters in the overworld, such as Flash Fire increasing Fire-type encounters or Lightning Rod behaving like Static.
- Revamped Field Moves: HMs can be used by Pokémon that can learn them even if they don’t currently know the move, Flash fully lights caves and reduces encounters, and Teleport functions similarly to Fly.
- Improved Item and Inventory Systems: Infinite TM uses, modern bag storage rules, improved item distribution, and updated Poké Mart mechanics help remove unnecessary grinding.
- Battle Frontier Improvements: Players receive more Battle Points per win, reduced tutor costs, and additional items in the Battle Frontier shop.
Known Bugs & Issues
