About This ROM Hack

Five years ago, Pokémon Omega Ruby XY was thrown together in three days — entirely offline — by a self-described naive beginner who just wanted to keep his two younger brothers busy over summer vacation. That's genuinely where this started.

After hitting 100k downloads, an alpha of what was then called "Omega Ruby Rebirth" dropped in 2021. It was buggy, barely made it past the first gym, and people still picked it up. That said something.

Origins is the definitive version, rebuilt completely from scratch — and it's not trying to follow the same path as every other hack out there. At its core, it's a comprehensive overhaul of Ruby — same Hoenn, but reimagined. The region has alternate story events, new sidequests, hidden items, and post-game content that gives you reasons to keep playing after the credits. It's not just a mechanical upgrade, it's a fuller world.

The Pokédex spans Gen 1 through Gen 9, landing at 412 Pokémon total, all rebalanced to fit Gen 3 competitive standards. Mega Evolutions are in — including a permanent Mega Evolution you can purchase in-game — and trainers, Gym Leaders, and the Elite Four have all been reworked to actually put up a fight. Movesets, learnsets, and a selection of Gen 8 moves have been updated to match.

Difficulty-wise, it leans toward the challenging end, but there's a Normal Mode available for players who just want to explore without the pressure.

It's built for anyone who wants a competitive, nostalgic Gen 3 experience with a lot more content packed in — and it shows how far a project can come from a pretty humble starting point.

Story Overview

The story takes place in an alternate version of Hoenn — familiar on the surface, but something's off. A strange phenomenon is spreading across the region, affecting the environment and Pokémon behavior in ways that don't have an obvious explanation.

As you work through it, you'll run into recognizable faces alongside entirely new ones — powerful trainers from across the Pokémon multiverse who might help you, challenge you, or both. The classic Hoenn beats are still there, but they're wrapped in new lore that gives the world more to dig into.

Beyond the main story, there's plenty to find — sidequests, secret areas, and post-game events that flesh things out further. It's a lot more to explore than the original Ruby ever offered.
