About This ROM Hack

Pokémon National History Museum is an escape-room style Pokémon ROM hack where players must solve a sequence of interconnected puzzles to escape a museum.

The game begins with the player trapped on the third floor of the museum. From there, the goal is simple in concept but difficult in execution: find your way out of the building by solving increasingly complex puzzles and trainer battles.

The hack blends battle strategy puzzles with overworld puzzle-solving, creating a gameplay style similar to logic puzzle games. Each challenge is designed to be solvable without resetting the game or relying on luck, encouraging players to analyze mechanics carefully and develop unique strategies.

To prevent players from becoming permanently stuck, the game includes a Game Master NPC who can provide hints or fix certain soft-lock situations, though this assistance costs in-game time.

Story Overview

You suddenly find yourself trapped inside the National History Museum, specifically on its mysterious third floor.

There is no clear explanation of how you got there, but one thing is certain: the only way out is to solve the museum’s challenges.

Each floor of the museum represents a different historical exhibition:

  • Third Floor – Egyptian Exhibition
  • Second Floor – Jurassic / Fossil Exhibition
  • First Floor – Ice Age Exhibition

To escape the building, you must work your way through each floor by defeating powerful trainers, solving hidden puzzles, and discovering clever strategies to overcome seemingly impossible encounters.

Some puzzles are straightforward, while others are intentionally hidden, deceptive, or extremely tricky. Only players with patience, logic, and creativity will manage to escape.

If you fail, you may find yourself repeatedly returning to the Game Master, asking for hints after countless defeats.

Key Features

  • Escape Room Gameplay: The entire hack is structured as a large puzzle escape room rather than a traditional Pokémon adventure.
  • Puzzle Trainer Battles: Many encounters are designed as strategic battle puzzles that require specific tactics to win.
  • Museum Floor Themes: Each floor has a unique theme — Egyptian history, dinosaurs and fossils, and the Ice Age.
  • Overworld Puzzle Design: Players must solve environmental puzzles in addition to trainer battles.
  • Game Master Hint System: A special NPC provides hints and can fix certain soft-lock situations in exchange for in-game time.
  • Challenging Difficulty: The hack is intentionally difficult and designed for players who enjoy solving tough strategic problems.
  • Double Battles and Custom Mechanics: Some encounters involve specialized battle setups that increase complexity.
  • Speedrun Potential: Experienced players can attempt fast completion runs once they understand the puzzle solutions.
  • Modern Framework: Built on the pokeemerald-expansion engine, allowing additional mechanics and custom scripting.

Known Bugs & Issues

  • Rare Freeze After Stakataka Battle: Some players previously experienced a freeze after defeating Stakataka due to an AI switching behavior issue. This was reportedly fixed in version 1.0.3, though the developer encourages players to report the issue if it persists.
  • Emulator Compatibility: The game should be played using mGBA. Other emulators may cause unexpected freezes or issues.
