About This ROM Hack
Pokemon Hardlove Gold NDS is a hardcore Johto difficulty hack built for players who enjoy intense battles, strict resource management, and advanced AI encounters. Developed using hg-engine, the project modernizes Pokémon HeartGold with Gen 9 mechanics, Mega Evolutions, permanent weather systems, custom AI behavior, and highly curated trainer battles while still keeping the classic Johto structure intact.
The creator describes the game as more than just a hard ROM hack. The goal is to create a very specific emotional experience — one where victories feel earned, mistakes are heavily punished, and every major battle becomes memorable. The hack leans heavily into the “hardcore nuzlocke” mindset, but it also includes optional accessibility systems like a built-in easy mode and optional level caps.
Unlike many enhancement hacks that simply buff levels, Hardlove Gold focuses on encounter design, AI behavior, and strategic pressure. Enemy trainers are designed to force difficult decisions, while the game intentionally limits easy setup strategies for the player. This creates a much more tactical style of gameplay where team building, prediction, and adaptation matter constantly.
The project is still actively in development, with roughly 200 battles completed and 7 out of 9 planned progression splits finished at the time of writing. Frequent updates continue adding new Mega Evolutions, Gen 9 mechanics, move implementations, AI fixes, and balance changes.
Key Features
- Custom AI System: Enemy trainers use heavily improved AI capable of smarter move choices, advanced strategy handling, and better interaction with mechanics like semi-invulnerability, Body Press calculations, weather, and terrain effects.
- Hardcore Difficulty Design: Battles are designed around difficult decision-making, limited resources, and punishing enemy teams rather than simple level inflation.
- Gen 9 Battle Mechanics: The hack is actively updating toward modern Pokémon mechanics, including newer moves, abilities, and battle interactions.
- Mega Evolutions: New Mega Pokémon are included, with additional Megas continuously being added through updates.
- No Player Setup Strategies: Setup-heavy strategies are intentionally restricted for the player to keep battles more tactical and less snowball-heavy.
- Permanent Terrain & Weather: Weather and terrain effects remain active permanently during battles and cannot simply be removed, dramatically changing encounter strategy.
- Optional Level Caps: Players can enable hardcore level caps while still allowing overleveling through placed Rare Candies if desired.
- Built-In Easy Mode: Despite the brutal design philosophy, the game includes optional easier settings for players who want a less punishing experience.
- Portable PC & Party Healing: QoL features allow easier team management and recovery without excessive backtracking.
- HM Improvements: HMs no longer need to be taught to Pokémon in order to function outside battle.
- Removed EV System: EVs are entirely removed to reduce grinding and focus gameplay more on strategy and team composition.
- PokéCenter Utility NPCs: Relearner services, IV/Nature setters, and status-setting NPCs are available throughout the game using Heart Scales.
- Gen 9 Moves & Champions Changes: Pokémon movesets are rebuilt around modern mechanics and competitive utility.
- Off-Type Gym Leader Teams: Gym Leaders frequently use unexpected Pokémon outside their traditional typings to make encounters less predictable.
- Toggleable Repel System: Players can freely control encounters more conveniently during exploration.
- Berry-Producing Apricorn Trees: Apricorn trees now provide berries for additional resource management options.
- Visible IVs/EVs/DVs: Important stat information is viewable directly in-game for easier optimization.
- Massive QoL Improvements: The hack includes numerous modern conveniences while still preserving the structure and atmosphere of Johto.
Known Bugs & Issues
- The project is still in Alpha status, so bugs, balance issues, and unfinished content should be expected. The developer actively releases updates addressing AI behavior, move interactions, and mechanical inconsistencies.
- Some features are still placeholder implementations, including certain Mega Evolution sprites and unfinished progression segments. Since the game is under heavy development, balance changes may also occur frequently between updates.
