Pokémon Hardlove Gold is a difficulty hack for HeartGold built on the hg-engine, taking clear inspiration from high-difficulty hacks like Run&Bun and Radical Red — and it shows in how the whole thing is designed.
The core philosophy is straightforward: cut the grind, raise the skill ceiling. EVs are removed entirely, and every Pokémon Center comes stocked with IV setters, Nature setters, and move relearners from the start. You're never wasting time on prep — the game wants you focused on strategy, not farming.
The custom AI is where it really separates itself. Trainers make smarter decisions, switch more intelligently, and actually respond to what you're doing rather than just spamming the best move. On top of that, trainer teams are carefully curated, player mechanics are restricted in specific ways, and certain battle conditions are made permanent — all of it working together to create a consistently demanding experience rather than just occasional difficulty spikes.
Despite all that, there's an easy mode and optional level caps built in, which opens it up to players who want a serious challenge without the full Kaizo-level punishment.
