About This ROM Hack

Pokémon FireRed Slide turns the entire overworld of Pokémon FireRed into a sliding puzzle.

Every standard ground tile behaves like ice, meaning that once the player begins moving in a direction, they continue sliding until they hit an obstacle. Because of this, simple tasks such as navigating towns, entering buildings, or reaching routes become puzzle challenges that require careful planning.

Unlike some small experimental hacks, FireRed Slide still keeps the original Kanto storyline mostly intact, allowing players to progress through gyms and major events similarly to the base game. The extra Sevii Islands content is not included, but otherwise the adventure structure closely mirrors the original.

Although the hack was partly made as a lighthearted or meme-style project, the creator notes that more effort went into polishing it compared to similar experimental hacks.

Key Features

  • Global Ice Physics Movement: Every normal ground tile behaves like ice, causing the player to slide continuously until hitting an obstacle.
  • Puzzle-Based Map Navigation: Each route, town, and building effectively becomes a puzzle that must be solved through careful movement planning.
  • Full Kanto Adventure: The main story and progression from the original FireRed remain mostly intact, allowing players to complete gyms and story events normally.
  • Lighthearted Challenge Design: The hack was created partly as a fun experimental project but still includes noticeable polishing compared to similar meme-style hacks.
  • Map-Based Puzzle Variety: The layout of Kanto maps creates different sliding challenges depending on obstacles, NPC placement, and terrain.

Known Bugs & Issues

  • Some limitations and design constraints are documented by the creator.
  • No Built-In Randomizer: Unlike the related Emerald Slide project, this version does not include a built-in randomizer because there was no available public resource for implementing one at the time.
  • Simpler Puzzle Design in Some Areas: Because the Kanto map layout tends to be more rectangular compared to Hoenn’s more organic map design, some sliding puzzles may feel simpler or less complex.
  • Aside from these points, no major gameplay-breaking bugs are specifically documented.
