About This ROM Hack

Pokémon Trade&’Stache is a tightly designed, short-form difficulty hack built specifically with hardcore Nuzlocke gameplay in mind. Rather than expanding content or story, the hack focuses on decision-making, efficiency, and convenience, stripping away excess to highlight strategic battles.

The defining mechanic of Trade&’Stache is its Encounter Trader system, which fundamentally changes how encounters are valued and used throughout the game.

Instead of every Pokémon being a long-term team candidate, encounters can be converted into resources, allowing players to trade newly caught Pokémon for items like TMs or held items. This creates constant risk–reward decisions and gives otherwise redundant encounters real strategic value.

Key Features

  • Encounter Traders: Trade the Pokémon you catch on a route for useful items such as held items or TMs, creating meaningful decision-making opportunities and reducing dead encounters.
  • Minimized Map Design: Routes are simplified, often containing only grass and necessary blockers. This speeds up gameplay and reduces downtime, prioritizing mechanics over aesthetics.
  • Short, Focused Experience: The total number of battles is reduced to around 40, making the game significantly shorter than most hacks while maintaining intensity.
  • Handcrafted Trainer Battles: All enemy trainer fights are manually designed to be challenging and interesting, rather than filler encounters.
  • Selective Pokédex: Nearly all Pokémon from Generations 1–3 are obtainable, excluding box legendaries and a few exceptions. No later-generation Pokémon are included.
  • Pokémon Balance Changes: Includes a heavily buffed Swalot and a moderately buffed Whiscash, encouraging usage of overlooked Pokémon.
  • Modern Mechanics: Uses modern movesets and battle mechanics via pokeemerald-expansion, with slight modifications to fit the game’s power curve.

Quality of Life Features

  • Status Spray Items: Instantly inflict status conditions on your own Pokémon for strategic setup.
  • Super Candy: Allows Pokémon to instantly level up to the next level cap, eliminating grinding.
  • Speed & Convenience Enhancements: Faster text, running indoors, and other modern QoL improvements.
  • Nuzlocke-Oriented Tools:
    • Level caps
    • IVs visible in the summary screen
    • Move relearner accessible from the summary screen
    • Forgettable HMs
