About This ROM Hack

Pokémon Tarragon is a very early alpha version of a new ROM hack project that is still firmly in its learning and experimentation phase. The developer is upfront about the project’s rough state, openly welcoming feedback and acknowledging that many aspects of the game are likely to change or be reworked in future versions.

This hack is planned as the first entry in a trilogy, with the current release serving primarily as a foundation rather than a polished standalone experience. While limited in scope, Pokémon Tarragon already showcases several modern mechanics and quality-of-life features, alongside original region design and large-scale routes.

Story Overview

You play as a recent graduate of Sorell University who has just returned to their hometown of Pine Glen. Shortly after arriving home, you are employed by your hometown Professor to assist with field research and help one of his associates work on completing the Pokédex.

Your cousin has already been working with the Professor for some time, but their behavior feels off. As you begin your new role and explore the region of Tarragon, questions start to form about what is really going on behind the scenes. The story hints at a deeper mystery that will likely be expanded upon in later entries of the planned trilogy.

In this alpha release, the story progresses up to the first Gym, setting the stage for future narrative developments rather than delivering a complete arc.

Key Features

  • New Region: Introduces the original Tarragon region, featuring large routes and an early look at its towns and geography.
  • Modern Pokémon Generations: Includes Pokémon from Generations 1 through 8, with the Physical/Special split implemented.
  • Improved Visual Tiles: Uses tilesets intended to be more detailed and visually appealing than vanilla assets, while still fitting the GBA style.
  • Early Running Shoes: Running shoes are available immediately, improving pacing and exploration from the start.
  • DexNav System: Allows players to search for and hunt specific Pokémon, supporting team-building even in early gameplay.
  • Irregular Starters: Starter Pokémon selection deviates from the traditional format, offering a less predictable beginning.
  • Black & White–Style Summary Screens: Incorporates BW-inspired Pokémon summary interfaces for clearer information display.
  • IV and EV Viewing: Players can directly view Pokémon IVs and EVs, reducing guesswork and external tool reliance.
  • Large Route Design: Routes are intentionally spacious, encouraging exploration and longer traversal segments.

Known Bugs & Issues

  • As an early alpha release, Pokémon Tarragon may contain bugs, incomplete systems, balance issues, or placeholder content. No formal bug list has been provided, and players should expect instability and unfinished elements. Many features and visuals may change significantly in future versions.
