About This ROM Hack
Pokémon Roman Mon is an experimental Pokémon Emerald ROM hack created as a first-time hacking project. It mainly focuses on exploring the limits of Pokémon typing mechanics. Inspired by Alpharad’s “Too Many Types” concept, this hack looks into an expanded and unconventional type system. It originally aimed to allow Pokémon to have up to four types, along with significant changes to encounters and trainers. The game retains Emerald’s original structure and progression but adds new mechanics. These include a wider range of Pokémon available (up to Generation 8), custom trainer teams, more Battle Frontier Pokémon, and rewritten dialogue taken from various sources. A lot of this project also serves as proof of concept by the developer. Some implementation details, such as the full type chart and encounter data, are documented externally instead of in-game.Key Features
- Expanded Type System: The hack experiments with a heavily expanded type chart, with some Pokémon potentially having more than two types. This significantly alters battle matchups and strategy, making type effectiveness more complex than in standard Pokémon games.
- Pokémon Availability up to Generation 8: The goal of the hack is to allow players to catch Pokémon from Generations 1 through 8. Some future expansion to Generation 9 has been mentioned as a possibility, but this is not confirmed.
- Increased Difficulty (Moderate): Trainer battles are more challenging than vanilla Emerald, with stronger teams and improved setups. However, the difficulty is intentionally kept below hardcore levels due to the already complex type interactions.
- Expanded Battle Frontier Pokémon Pool: The Battle Frontier includes a significantly larger selection of Pokémon compared to the original Emerald, increasing variety and replayability.
- Custom Trainer Teams: Many trainers use custom-designed teams, including contributions and ideas from other people, rather than relying solely on vanilla trainer rosters.
- Custom Text and Dialogue: Dialogue throughout the game has been modified, incorporating custom text sourced from multiple places, though exact sources and scope are not fully documented.
Known Bugs & Issues
- Spamming L + B when checking enemy team types during battle can crash the ROM.
- Returning to the battle scene may temporarily remove menu text; navigating with A or B restores it.
- Additional bugs may exist due to the experimental nature of the project, and documentation may be incomplete.
