About This ROM Hack

Pokémon Red/Green/Blue – NC Revision is a visual and stylistic overhaul of the original Gen 1 games, focused on improving sprite quality while staying faithful to the classic Game Boy aesthetic.

The main goal is to better reflect Ken Sugimori’s original Pokémon artwork while preserving the nostalgic feel of the original games. On top of that, the hack restores Japanese names for towns and characters, making the Kanto region feel closer to its real-world inspiration.

It builds on the PureRGB project, meaning it also inherits a large number of subtle gameplay improvements, bug fixes, and optional quality-of-life features—while keeping the experience fundamentally “Gen 1.”

Key Features

  • Sugimori-Inspired Visual Overhaul: Many Pokémon sprites, trainer sprites, and overworld visuals have been redesigned to better match Ken Sugimori’s original artwork while staying true to Gen 1 style.
  • Extensive Sprite Improvements: Updates include trainer battle sprites, overworld sprites, tilesets, title screens, and player back sprites, along with new and redesigned assets.
  • Japanese Name Restoration: Towns and most human characters use their original Japanese names, enhancing authenticity for a region based on real-world Japan.
  • Multiple Playable Versions: Includes a standard version, a playable female protagonist version, and a gender-neutral version with adjusted dialogue and sprites.
  • PureRGB Base Enhancements: Inherits improvements like better Pokémon availability, rebalanced movesets, bug fixes, and optional gameplay tweaks.
  • All 151 Pokémon are obtainable: Every Pokémon can be obtained within a single version, improving completion and replayability.
  • Optional Gameplay Customization: Features toggles for palettes, music, type matchups, EXP bars, difficulty tweaks, and more directly in-game.
  • Quality of Life Improvements: Includes HM deletion, softlock prevention, earlier access to key Pokémon and items, and additional helpful NPCs.
  • Classic Mechanics Preserved: Iconic Gen 1 quirks and glitches (like MissingNo. and item duplication) remain intact but are made safer to use.
  • New & Restored Content: Includes areas like Cinnabar Volcano, postgame rematches, secret areas, and features like the MOVEDEX.
  • Minor Dialogue Enhancements: Text has been lightly edited to better match the ‘90s tone, include references, and restore certain original jokes and character traits.

Known Bugs & Issues

  • No specific issues are listed for NC Revision itself.
  • However, since it builds on PureRGB and includes extensive modifications, minor visual or text inconsistencies may exist. Information on known bugs is limited.
