About This ROM Hack
NC Revision is a 30th-anniversary ROM hack of Pokémon Red, Green, and Blue for the Game Boy. It modernizes graphics while staying true to the original Game Boy art style and Ken Sugimori’s promotional designs. The hack restores Japanese town names and most human character names to better reflect the region’s real-world inspiration (Japan), while also introducing optional female and genderless protagonist versions.
This hack also incorporates Vortiene’s PureRGB graphical improvements, with additional sprite edits, tile tweaks, and subtle text changes to enhance the nostalgic feel of the original games while making gameplay more visually consistent.
Key Features
- Graphics Enhancement: Sprites for trainers, overworld, Pokémon (including starters, Pikachu, Raichu, Oddish, Machop, Golem, Dragon-line, and more) are updated or redesigned.
- Japanese Name Restoration: Towns and human characters use their original Japanese names, except for Lt. Surge (referred to as Lt. Matisse Surge in Vermilion/Kuchiba City).
- Playable Female Character: Replaces Red’s sprites with a female protagonist design inspired by the Pokémon Adventures manga (Blue/Green), with adjusted dialogue and default names.
- Genderless/Non-Binary Character Option: Replaces Red’s sprites with Yellow-inspired sprites (from Pokémon Adventures manga), with dialogue adapted to remove gendered terms.
- Text & Dialogue Tweaks: Minor text adjustments, additional references to other video games, and culturally accurate translations of Japanese wordplay.
- Gameplay Adjustments: Safari Zone interactions simplified (throw rocks → approach), Great Ball renamed Super Ball, Ultra Ball renamed Hyper Ball, PureRGB Hyper Ball renamed Mega Ball.
- Overworld & Tileset Updates: Many tiles, including tower catacombs and interiors, updated; some Pokémon overworld sprites (Clefairy) edited for continuity.
- Title & Interface Updates: New title screen logos, updated trainer cards, back sprites, and Gym Leader overworld sprites (some based on Gen 2 edits).
Other Enhancements:
- Protagonist’s dad dialogue and appearance updated.
- Professor Oak calls regarding Pokémon Box storage instead of Pokémon Snap.
- Classroom no longer referred to as “Detention.”
- Dialogue adjustments for Copycat, bikers, and Bill’s Garden/Natsume interactions.
