About This ROM Hack

Pokémon Dual-Type Emerald is a creative gameplay overhaul of Pokémon Emerald where the core idea is simple but game-changing: every Pokémon now has two types. If a Pokémon originally had only one type, it has been given a brand-new secondary typing. In some cases, even existing dual-type Pokémon have had their typings adjusted to better reflect their design, evolution line, or for pure gameplay fun.

Many of these typing decisions are intentionally imaginative. Some feel obvious, while others lean into creativity and experimentation. Due to these sweeping type changes, the rest of the game has also been reworked — trainer battles, boss fights, and encounters have been adjusted to match the new type landscape. The result is a fresh take on Hoenn that encourages new team compositions and unexpected strategies.

The project is considered finished by the creator, with no planned future updates unless a game-breaking issue is discovered.

Story Overview

While the narrative itself remains unchanged, the journey feels very different due to the universal dual-typing system. Familiar routes, Gyms, and major battles play out in new ways because type matchups are less predictable. Pokémon that were once simple to counter may now have unexpected resistances or offensive coverage, making the classic Emerald adventure more strategic and dynamic.

Key Features

  • Universal Dual Typing: Every Pokémon that originally had only one type now has a second type, dramatically changing matchups, resistances, and team building.
  • Selective Type Changes: Some Pokémon have had their original typings adjusted to better reflect their evolution lines, designs, or for more interesting gameplay variety.
  • Physical/Special Split: The game includes the Physical/Special split, modernizing battle mechanics compared to vanilla Emerald.
  • Fairy Type Added: The Fairy type is implemented, further expanding type interactions and balance possibilities.
  • Catch-Em-All Pokédex: Every Pokémon up to Gen 3, including all legendaries, is obtainable in the game.
  • Legendary Placement Changes: Some legendary Pokémon are only available after the Champion battle or are hidden among strong late-game trainers.
  • Updated Trainer & Gym Teams: Trainer rosters, including Gym Leaders, are redesigned to account for the new typings, offering fresh and more complex battles.
  • Evolution Accessibility Changes: Evolution methods are adjusted so all Pokémon are able to evolve within the game.
  • Typing-Driven Battle Variety: The new type combinations create entirely new strategic possibilities, encouraging unusual and creative team builds.

Known Bugs & Issues

  • No known bugs are currently reported by the creator. However, players are encouraged to report any issues they encounter. Since the project is considered complete, fixes are only likely if a major or game-breaking bug is found.
